A Look Back: Fillies in the Derby

With it being Derby Week and all I figured it would be fun to look back at some classic races from the past. This Saturday it is expected that Eight Belles will try to be the first filly since Winning Colors in 1988 to win the Derby. Prior to that only Genuine Risk (1980) and Regret (1915) have been able to pull of this momentous feat.

Below are the videos of the last two fillies to win the Kentucky Derby. The first video is of Genuine Risk in 1980, the second is Winning Colors in 1988.

Genuine Risk and Winning Colors each won their race in an entirely different manner. While Genuine Risk ran mid-pack most of the race and made her winning move as the field moved off the far turn, Winning Colors cleared the field early, set solid fractions, and held off the late charge of two year-old horse of the year, Forty Niner, for the win.
