Champions League Review

Marseille 1-2 Liverpool

Marseille was able to strike first against Liverpool, but Steven Gerrard's two goals were enough to give the Reds the victory. Gerrard's first goal was an absolute thing of beauty (video below) as he curled in a blast from outside the penalty area with the keeper only able to watch it find the top corner of the net. Gerrard scored the game winner on a PK.

Update: Youtube has nixed all of the videos containing any Champions League highlights...so you'll just have to trust me that it was a spectacular goal.

Juventus 1-0 Zenit St. Petersburg

I thought Zenit played a very solid game against Juventus and really thought they could have grabbed the three points on the road, but they couldn't cash in when they had the chance. Juve really didn't play all that well, and were out-worked by the Zenit side for a large majority of the match. In the end, that didn't matter at all because Del Piero knocked home a free kick from outside the penalty box in the 76th minute to send Juve on to the victory. It was a tough loss for a Zenit squad that played a hell of a game.

Dynamo Kyiv 1-1 Arsenal

Kyiv let a golden opportunity slip through their finger when they couldn't close out Arsenal in the final minutes. William Gallas drove home the equalizer in the 88th minute and Arsenal was able to salvage a point in the Ukraine. What a heart breaker for Dynamo Kyiv.

As for all the other matches, Roma falling at home and Celtic drawing at home against Aab are probably the biggest surprises to me. I was also a little surprised by the Man U. game but until Cristiano Ronaldo is back at full strength (he was a sub on Tuesday), Man U. is just not as powerful as last season.

Chelsea 4-0 Bordeaux
Roma 1-2 CFR
Panathinaikos 0-2 Internazionale
Bremen 0-0 Anorthosis
Basel 1-2 Shakhtar
Barcelona 3-1 Sporting
PSV Eindhoven 0-3 Atletico de Madrid
Manchester United 0-0 Villarreal
Celtic 0-0 Aab
Steaua Bucuresti 0-1 Bayern Munich
Lyon 2-2 Fiorentina
Porto 3-1 Fenerbahce
Real Madrid 2-0 BATE
