2008 Bowl Selections and Final Update

UPDATED 12/20: The regular season finished up with me looking at eight games under the .500 mark thanks to a solid 4-1 in the final weekend (which only helped to negate the awful 1-4 on rivalry weekend).

We now turn our attention to the bowl games, which start today with Wake and Navy in Washington, D.C.

UPDATED 12/22: A nice 4-for-5 start this weekend gets the bowl season off to a pleasant beginning.

UPDATED 12/27: I've leveled off the last couple of days, but I still got my head above the .500 mark. I can deal with the ND/Hawai'i game blowing the Over/Under...I did not like Central Michigan getting beat down in their home state.

UPDATED 12/30: I went through an absolutely brutal stretch the last couple of days that was finally broken up by hitting the UNDER in the Northwestern/Mizzou game. My 5-1 early start is now a weak 6-8, with a couple of tough losses amongst the eight defeats (Cal and Rutgers won but failed to cover the spread, along with Carolina losing by a point in a PICK 'EM game).

We've got three games today and I really need a 3-for-3 to stop the bleeding.

UPDATED 1/1: A good little run the past couple of days gets me above the .500 mark.

UPDATED 1/2: USC/Penn State come through with the OVER, as does the Cotton Bowl match-up of Texas Tech and Ole Miss. Barring a huge collapse, I should get through the bowl season above the break-even mark, which will be nice after an up-and-down regular season.

UPDATED 1/7: Texas wins but can't cover the spread and a blow-out in the GMAC Bowl hits the UNDER, meaning I head into the final Bowl game at three over the .500 mark. Not bad for the bowl season, but certainly not enough to erase my regular season woes.

I've got Florida (-2) tomorrow night in the BCS Title game for my final pick of the year.

This Saturday, the Fair Grounds will run the Lecomte Stakes which means I can turn my attention from College Football to the Run for the Roses. The Lecomte isn't a key Kentucky Derby prep race, but it's a first chance to get a look at this year's three year-old crop.

UPDATED 1/9: Florida finishes off the college football season with a win over Oklahoma and covers the spread in the the process.

I ended up at 19-15 for the bowl season, for a solid 56% winning clip. However, overall for the whole season (Regular and Bowl) I ended up four games under the break-even mark at 47-51-2.

Only eight months until the kick-off to the 2009 season.

Regular Season: 28-36-2 (44% / 56%)
Bowl Season: 19-15 (56% / 44%)
Final Combined: 47-51-2 (48% / 52%)

A note on the point spreads and over/unders listed below. I chose to make all my selections for every bowl game prior to the first game being played, which means some of the selections in later games will have lines that don't match the "current" line. In order to avoid having to constantly update the site every time a point spread moves I am using the line at the time I made my initial selections as the benchmark for whether I am correct or incorrect on a particular choice. However, if you want to view the current line, which will probably sightly differ from what I have here, I recommend following this link to Covers.com.

One more note, I noticed a couple of typos in my Over/Unders (looks like I mixed them up). The original Over/Under that I had for the T.Tech/Ole Miss game was 45, which was way-off, as is the O/U for the Utah/Alabama game (which I had at 70 and it should have been 45). Anyway, it looks like I swaped those two. I didn't make any difference in the T.Tech games as that over hit very easily. I kept my Utah/Bama pick the same.
