I'm watching Santa Anita closely today as I had a bit of luck there yesterday.  43 minutes to post for Race 1.

Star-divide

Underway already is Sunland, Louisana Downs, Aqueduct, Philadelphia Park, Oaklawn, Turf Paradise, Fair Grounds, Turfway, and Gulfstream.

If it's your first time here, make sure to read Matt's outstanding beginner's guide to this stuff.

Stop by and give me some picks, especially some pick fours and sixes!

Santa Anita Race #1

I like the 4 Broken Tango, but I don’t know if I like anything with it.

The more I look at this, the more I like the 8, Ivory Fudge.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

I like the 4, the 7 and the 8 here, so I’m going:

4 WPS
8 WPS
and 7 with 4/8

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

Damn, the 8 had a terrible ride there.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

Just turned on SA

They on or off the turf today?

Found it...on the turf.

About time.

Hey Matt – it’s on the turf.

Santa Anita Race #2

I like the 2 there, but the 5 is so strong. I guess I’ll go with the 5/2 exacta

The 6 is an interesting horse there too. I might do something with it.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 3:44 PM EST reply actions

2 looks nice...

the 3 intrigues me a little, like that cut in distance.

I have the 5 and 3 in my Pick four .

Good coverage.

And you’re getting some value.

Ha...no that's a blanket finish.

Did anyone want to win that race?

Wow. A $20 winner and a $20 shower thus far in two races.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

SA has had some nice prices the last two days.

First flash of the odds board for the 3rd...

and a big dump of cash on the 4, a first time starter. 3/1 to 8/5

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 4:09 PM EST reply actions

Good, there should be more in the pools for the 5.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

Rosario at 18/1?

Yes, please. He’s got to be good for a piece of the prize, at least.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

4 is a nice looking filly

Jock didn’t even show her the stick.

I thought so too. That 4 was just monstrous.

Turfway #8

A 14-1 shot just took that home

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 4:38 PM EST reply actions

Dont like Rose Catherine at all in the 4th at SA

I know she dominated a turf sprint at BEL, but these downhill turf events are a different beast.

The 5 is the only one that has run and won at the course/distance.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

Well, at least I had a 9/5 EX saver....

What do you think about Pinstripe Kid?

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 5:07 PM EST reply actions

I think he fits in nicely here..

little bit of a class jump but I like that he’s been facing open company. Seems like he can win from the front or off the pace.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Does he have enough for the 4?

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

I was just looking at the 4

Not sure what to make of him. Mullins sure seemed to turn him around and I seem to get burnt when I bet against his horses.

You like the 4 in this spot?

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

I really only like the 4 and the 8 in this race.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

That's probably the direction I'd go, too.

I don’t see the 2/1 on the 2. I must be missing something.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

I will say this...

the 0-24 jockey scares me with the 4.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

If Baze were on the 4, I’d be much more confident.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

I’m playing the 8 and playing him in the exacta too. 8 w 4/2/6

I can’t decide on that second place :)

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

I'm leaning towards just a straight play on the 8

This next race is a pig

Only three of these have ever even led a race at any point. Ugly.

I don’t like anything in this race. If you put a gun to my head, I’d take the 6.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Exact same one I'd choose if I had to..

thankfully, I can pass and look to the 7th.

Nice score.

$22.

I’m liking ’capping with you – we find $20 horses :)

I always find it helps to talk it out

so many people think handicapping is done in secret but it’s always helpful to me to kind of sound off ideas. Doesn’t always work out but sometimes it’s nice to have someone confirm what you think, especially about horses at bigger odds.

SA #7

I really hate to go against Rosario on a 2/1 horse, but I don’t like him.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 6:20 PM EST reply actions

I love the 4 in this spot...

the layoff is an obvious concern but I think he could get the perfect setup.

Win on 4 and put the 4 under the 3/6 in an EX

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

Well, another EX saver...

Would have liked to see a little slower opening 1/4 if he was going to be on the lead.

Nice call on the saver.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

Gonna finish up with the late Daily Double

I like the other Canani horse, the 7…Espinoza 7/26 on the lawn, distance suits him, good finishing kick.

7 with 5, 12.

My hit % with Daily Doubles is horrible but I just love to start and end the day with them.

Man – I also like the 7.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

He's improved as they've stretched him out.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

Only concern is if there is some pace to the first half of this – he might have to come from way off or burn his legs early.

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, the pace is a question mark..

I’m not exactly sure how this one is going to shake out.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

2/5 now.

We should get a nice number on the 7

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Jan 24, 2010 7:02 PM EST up reply actions

I wonder if the 6 is best at a mile and a quarter.

He 2 wins at the distance were in France where he ran on much heavier course. I don’t know. 2/5 seems way too low. I could see even money or 6/5 but not 2/5.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

I echo Jeff Siege's comments from HRTV...

why did they drop the 12 in for a tag after finishes 2nd in a MdSpWt? Sounds an alarm to me.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 7:22 PM EST reply actions

that should be Jeff Siegel...jeez, fingers are falling apart.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

The owners spend $220,000 on the 12...

and are now willing to sell him for $25K.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 24, 2010 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

Interesting commentary from Millie Ball as they load..

said that Zayat didn’t want a claiming level horse and was dropping into the first MdClm to come around. Must be nice to throw away money like that.
