Day 1 of the 2010 National Handicapping Tournament

I'm going to use this post to follow the tracks and races involved in the first day of the NHC in Las Vegas.  In addition to the eight mandatory plays, players can play seven optional plays from the same tracks (Aqueduct, Gulfstream, Laurel, Fair Grounds, Santa Anita, and Golden Gate).

So far, the weather looks good at all the tracks; fast and firm.

UPDATE #1: The mandatory plays for Saturday were just released, featuring a turf sprint at Gulfstream, along with two races from the Sunshine Millions - the Filly and Mare Sprint and the Classic.

UPDATE #2: Link to the leaderboard.

UPDATE #3: The first day leader, Brian Troop, finished with a score of $232.60, a single day record at the NHC.  He's about $80 ahead of the the 2nd place player.

First big price of the day...

comes from race 1 at Aqueduct. The 4 horse wins to pay $37.70.

Um, a rather large payout in the first at Laurel

$139.80 to win and $41.80 to place for the winner, the 7. Those are some serious prices. Anyone that had that horse in the tournament will have those payouts capped at $40.00 and $20.00. Still, that’s some serious cash.

Laurel kicks out another decent price

The 3 pays 18.60 and 6.80 in race 4.

And now Gulfstream gets into the act..

22.00 and 7.40 for the 2 in race 3.

I suspect when the first leaderboard is shown we’ll see several big numbers up top. Of course, all of these prices would be in optional races which can skew early returns.

The first mandatory play of the day is coming up

The 4th at GP has a field of 12…4 the fav. at 9/5 right now.

Jill Byrne interviewed Mike Watchmatker from the DRF on Twinspires.com

He’s on the committee that selects the mandatory races. Interesting take on the process.

93/1 on the place horse at Fair Grounds...

interesting.

The place horse paid $33.00...

another cap horse.

big price in the 8th at AQU

32.40 and 11.20 for the 4.

These longshots at AQU and Laurel have got to be making the players that specialize in east coast tracks very happy.

And another big one at Laurel...

That’s three very nice price horses at Laurel today.

21.40 and 7.40 on the 3 in the 7th.

First flash of the leaderboard...

NHC XI Leaderboard

The leader is almost $20 up on the 2nd place player. Obviously, he must have hit at least one of those bombs at Laurel, Aqu, or FG.

was just about to ask

if they have a leaderboard or anything.

are you fake handicapping the mandatory races as a test to see how you’d be doing?

Nah, I'm going to look at them tomorrow...

but didn’t get a chance to look at the Form for the mandatory races today. Just following the prices today.

Don't know who won the 9th at AQU..

but it wasn’t the 3/5 favorite. Three horse photo and it looks like the 9 at 18/1 might have gotten up…another big price at Aqueduct if it holds.

The players that used their optionals for the east coast tracks might have a big day 1 edge on anybody saving their bullets for the west coast plays.

Prices just keep rollin' in...

the place horse at Gulfstream paid 32.00…

The 9 at AQU pays 39.60 and 10.60…..

I missed the first at Santa Anita...and it paid big

Winner, the 1, pays 15.20 and 8.20. Place horse paid 61.00…so another capped place horse. That’s three today by my count.

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

The 9 at AQU triggered a Pick 6 carryover of 28,528

The 3rd mandatory race of the day about to go off at Laurel

"A bad day at the race track is better than a good day at the office."

by MattGSeattle on Jan 29, 2010 4:30 PM EST reply actions

And a final big price at Laurel...

the 9th is won by the 7 and pays 21.60 and 9.40.

That’s a big result in a mandatory since everyone has to use a bullet in that spot.

4th mandatory ready to run at Gulfstream

Chalk.

11/1 winner in the 3rd at SA

There has really been some nice prices for this first day. Sometimes in these tournaments it turns into chalk city but not today. A player that has used his optionals well could have a big day today.

24.80 and 8.00 are the payouts.

New leaderboard update...

Leaderboard

Same guy leads…he put another $50 or so on top of his total but he’s only up by a few bucks at this point. Of course, there is a LONG way to go.

5th mandatory race (7th at FG) goes to the chalk.

Won’t make up ground with that one.

We could see a price in the 9th at GP

It’s a MdSpWt on the lawn at one mile. Big field with the co-favs at 9/2.

by MattGSeattle on Jan 29, 2010 5:15 PM EST reply actions

Yep, decent price. 10 wins at 7/1.

11/1 in the mandatory race at Golden Gate

Can’t play it safe in this tournament; players that were willing to take shots at good price plays are being rewarded.

Only two mandatory plays left for the day..

the 6th and 7th at Santa Anita.

Players got to be looking for some prices here at the end of the day, especially if you have some optional plays left.

Another leaderboard update...

new leader…and he’s up by almost $30. Nice 1st day.

the 4 takes the 6th at SA…went off at 11/1. A big price in the 2nd to last mandatory of the day.
