This morning the Breeders' Cup released the pre-entries for all fourteen races for this year's marquee thoroughbred event at at BreedersCup360.com. In all, a record 184 horses were pre-entered with several races receiving an overflow of nominations. The draw for the 2010 Breeders' Cup will take place next Tuesday, November 2nd at 10am eastern time at which time a maximum of fourteen horses will enter each race with up to two (2) alternate entries.
You can find a list of the pre-entries for Day 1 and Day 2 below the jump and I'll have some thoughts on the potential fields a little bit later. The potential alternate entries for each race (if any) are listed in order of preference by the Breeders' Cup.

No great surprises here, although I thought Byword was coming over and never read where he was specifically not coming. I like him and wanted to see where he stacked up in the Classic.
I agree, he would have been an interesting horse to put into the mix
I’m a big surprised how soft the Turf came up – eleven entries, three of which have 1st preference in other races…possibly and 8-horse field…eh.

Classic trends
I found this on another site. If accurate, I like this type of info. We might want to repost it if we have a post devoted specifically to handicapping the Classic.
Positives
•All running styles can win but rally types preferred
•2nd is dominated by stalkers
•82% of 3rd place finishers are stalkers/closers
•60% of 4th are closers
•Wire types finish less than 20% in each of 2nd, 3rd and 4th slots
•Must have run a sharp last race + sharp Grade 1 race during campaign
Negatives
•Fave runs 1st-2nd 60%
•Less than three starts in the campaign
•No wins at 1 1/8 miles and up
•Never run at the 1 ¼ distance
•Posted a new Beyer/BRIS top figure in previous race (unless a 3 year old)
•Travers winners are 0-12
•Gelding
Great info!
We’ll definitely incorporate some info like that into some of the preview posts.
Travers winners 0-for-12…never would have guessed that.

Man O Man
My horse is back, Champagne D’Oro. I have bet that horse so often, then on I think Belmont day, I didn’t see her in a race and she wins at a price around 40-1. I wouldn’t be surprised to see long odds again. I may have to go put 10 on her just to make sure the streak continues of me putting bets on her, and she turns around and loses lol.
The F&M Sprint is going to be pure anarchy
I took just a brief look at the PPs and the amount of talent and speed in that race is insane.

I don't know if they do.
The only ones I know of (right now) are DRF and Brisnet. I’ve been using the free Brisnet PPs for the last few weeks.

Brisnet
I wouldn’t imagine there are free early PPs right now for BC? I use the free ones A LOT throughout the year, off the http://horsehats.com site.
You're probably right...
I hadn’t checked over there recently. They probably switched over to the “for a charge” PPs before the pre-entries came out.

I'm going to
Bet her for sure. The one time I didn’t do it, I got burnt. I typically put about 10 to win on her and that day she was I think 49-1. I was extremely upset that I overlooked her in that race. I’m not sure what I’ve always loved betting her, but just always had this feeling would pay off. lol it would have.
Well, you gotta bet her at the BC
cause you can’t let her get away twice!

Gio Ponti
I kind of hope he does run the Classic, it’s another big name to take some money from Blame and Lucky. I read someone yesterday said they don’t think Blame has much of a chance?!? I was thinking had to be a Zenyatta fan just disregarding every other horse, but I would think he and Lucky are going to see a pretty good price, especially if Gio Ponti runs too.
I'm really curious as to how the betting breaks down in the Classic
I think Quality Road might be the horse that goes off at the most surprising price…don’t know why, just a hunch. Oddly enough, in Europe, most of their bookmakers have Lucky as the co-favorite with Zenyatta.
I’m not sure how anyone could think Blame doesn’t have much of a chance – I’d be shocked if one of the Big 4 doesn’t win the Classic.

by Matt Gardner on Oct 27, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Surprising as in
He’ll be the favorite, or he won’t take on much money? I first was thinking lucky would see some longer odds, but sounds like he may end up bring in a good bit of money. I agree with you on the big 4, just not sure which one to go with. I dont’ really want to bet Zenyatta just for value sake. I don’t care about the Travers winner being 0-12 in the Classic and I have bet Lucky all year long, so I likely will put something down on him. But if Quality Road and Blame see longer odds, I don’t know that I could avoid putting money on either of them. Sound wishy washy enough lol? This is my problem. I really like one then I go to another.
I think he'll be a bit higher on the board...
not a huge number, but of the big 4 I think he’ll end up with the highest odds. Could be wrong…just a feeling I have.
It’s really tough to come up with one pick in the Classic; I haven’t been able to decide how I’m going to try and attack that race. I’ll definitely punch all four on my Pick 4 ticket, although I’d love to go skinny in the Classic so I can go deeper in the Dirt Mile.

I'm probably just going to make a
few win bets through out the day and maybe do some daily doubles. Hit a few of those and it could be a pretty good day. I think I’m down to Lucky and Blame for the Classic. I may pick one of them and do 10 WPS, and put my standard 10 on Champagne D’Oro.
The great thing about the BC
is you really only need to hit one race to bring in some decent cash.
I like playing the doubles on BC weekend, as well. Like you said, cash a couple of those and you’ll be looking pretty good.

Fly Down and First Dude
So then you get into – what about these guys? Yeah, they are 3YO but First Dude doesn’t know that – he just knows how to count (“…hm there’s first place, i need to be behind him and in front of the others.”)
My sleeper here is Fly Down. He’s run some good races and he is just ready to pop. You know he can go the distance and he can finish – that leaves jockey positioning as a BIG KEY. He and Zenyatta will run 95% the same style race.
I know it's not his first choice
But for some reason, I am quite intrigued by Awesome Gem potentially going in the marathon. He’s tried everything else in his career, why the heck not!
He'd have as good of a shot as most in that race.
And he probably fits that race just as well as he does the Dirt Mile.

As an FYI,
The Breeders’ Cup has slightly changed the race order on both day 1 and day 2 and I’ve posted the changes to the front page. The most significant of the moves is switching the Sprint and the Dirt Mile on Saturday, which takes the Sprint out of the Pick Six sequence. While most of us aren’t Pick Six players, I still find it interesting that this change was made. I’m guessing that it’s due to the fact that the Dirt Mile will likely feature a full field of 14 while the Sprint is probably going to be 12, at most.
"A bad day at the track is better than a good day at the office."
I should have read the entire press release before commenting!
The quote from the Breeders’ Cup states that the depth of the Dirt Mile field was the primary reason for the switch with the Sprint.
