2010 Breeders' Cup: Day 2 Picks

I don't have a lot of time until I head out to Churchill this morning, but below you can find the link to today's scratches and changes:

Churchill Downs Changes

With that out of the way, here's a quick rundown of the direction I think I'm going in today's races.  Good luck to everyone out there, I hope you cash a big one at some point during the day.

Star-divide

Juvenile Turf: I've been waffling a lot on this race but I might take a stab with the 20/1 shot, Deciphering Dreams as a long-shot play.

Sprint: Lots of different ways to go in this race but I like Warrior's Reward and Riley Tucker on top and perhaps Smiling Tiger to get a piece of it along the way.

Turf Sprint: Silver Timber is the standout, to me, but I'll also have my eye on Stradivinsky.

Juvenile: I like Rouge Romance at a price.

Mile: It's Goldikova's world, we all just live in it.  However, I've been impressed enough with Gio Ponti (provided his odds drift a bit) that I'm going to make a small play to try and upset the heavy favorite.  It's probably a loss but I'm gonna try anyway.

Dirt Mile: I like three in this race: Here Comes Ben, Theskyhasnolimit and Tizway.  I just need to figure out how to play them all.

Turf: With what happened to Midday yesterday I'm less bullish on the Euros this year.  Al Khali will probably be my value play in this spot, with some action going towards Dangerous Midge, as well.

Classic: Still think the race sets up best for Blame and Zenyatta but will have to wait for the will-pays to figure out how I'm going to ultimately attack this race.

Good luck, everyone!

Just read

That Workforce was scratched about an hour ago. So, change my Turf pick to Behkabad.

Impressive stretch run by Pluck

He was practically out of the picture and blew by everyone.

Oh dang

They’re having to put down Rough Sailing. He appeared okay when he got up, but he apparently fractured his shoulder. Not the kind of press you want on a day when so many are tuning in.

Big Drama

He was just a bit ahead entering the stretch, but it looked like 3 other horses had a shot. As soon as they made that turn he just flipped the switch and put the field away easily.

Damn

Atta Boy Roy being taken off in an ambulance.

Appears he is okay

Was just reported that 2 vets looked at him and couldn’t find anything wrong. Borel thought Roy took a bad step or two, but it seems ok.

Chamberlain Bridge

Another impressive come from behind effort. The grass really seems to be playing for closers today.

Uncle Mo

Wow, destroyed the field with ease.

Goldikova!

Wow, that was amazing. She looked a bit listless…even on the turn, and then just turned the jets on. Goldikova just zoomed by the field.

Dakota Phone

Hope someone had him at that price.

Dangerous Midge

Euros continue to dominate this one.

So here we go!

Can Zenyatta do it again?
This race sets up so well for Blame it’s not even funny! And Garrett Gomez is smoking!
Looking at Lucky looks fantastic!
And don’t discount Espoir City! A fantastic horse in Japan.

Sheesh!

Wow

3 strides too late… That mare is a superstar, and may have just run her best ever race in defeat. Her performance in the second half of that race was out of this world. Good winner too, nice run.

Jesus

I actually thought she nipped him at the wire…I was probably thrown by the fact that she galloped out past Blame. Damn, what a race.

But I can’t say I’m not bummed right now.

What a race

my heart rate is just recovering. I won pretty big with Blame … and I feel awful. Hard to bet these races where you’re emotionally involved. Zenyatta will go down as a pretty special mare.

I still believe....l

The best I’ve seen since I started following the sport in the late 80’s. I make no excuses, she lost today to the better horse. There isn’t such a thing as a Career Achievement Award — so unfortunately I can’t even be disappointed in that she won’t be recognized at the Eclipses this year. A historical oddity that a horse this great will never with HOTY.

I don’t think I’ll get over this one for a few days.

A fantastic race and a fantastic display for the sport

Inside the final furlong I’d thought she’d get up at the wire but Blame was gutsy in deep stretch.

Her running style finally got her beat…if she gets a clean trip and she probably wins. But, of course, that’s horse racing – it’s never easy. Her defeat today, I believe, is another testament as to how hard it was to win 19 in a row. Stone cold closers just don’t do that but she did.

A great performance by those two horses and that Classic will go down in history as on of the best. Zenyatta, even in defeat, showed her class.
