2010 Breeders' Cup Payouts

The Breeders' Cup may be one of the most difficult betting weekends of the year but you can't say that you aren't rewarded if you can find a winning combination. The 2010 edition of the cup was no exception as only two of the fourteen winners at this year's Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs paid less than $10 on a $2 Win bet.  Fifty-cent Pick Three routinely paid over $250 all weekend long (a phenomenal return), and the Superfecta was once again a path to glory, paying over $10,000 on a $1 bet four times.

Below are the complete 2010 Breeders' Cup payouts for your viewing pleasure (or for further punishment...if you were like me this weekend).

Star-divide

A couple of quick thoughts on the above payouts:

  • I don't feel too bad about Shared Account winning the F&M Turf due to the fact that the payouts in the Pick 3/4/6 clearly show that very few people considered her, as well.
  • If you liked Uncle Mo and Goldikova but spread to almost ALL in the Dirt Mile, you were rewarded with a pretty decent Pick 3 payout of $171.80 for $0.50.  That's not bad for two heavy favorites in the first two legs.  Goldikova was a pretty clear single and Uncle Mo was a must use for most players.
  • A Blame/Zenyatta exacta pays $33.20?  Why didn't I put all my money on that in a box?  That's a pretty good payout for the top two horses in the field.
  • An $800k Pick Six payout was triggered almost entirely by the upset in the Dirt Mile and Blame's win in the Classic.  The other four races fell decently in line; Dangerous Midge was a long shot but with such a short field in the Turf, he was probably included on a lot of tickets.

I just read overall handle was up over 15% this year. That’s most impressive.

That's a big time gain.

Especially when you consider the economy. That’s pretty significant.

TV ratings were way up, as well. Doubt that will hold next year without the Zenyatta interest, but it’s nice to see. I would hope that at some point the BC will go back to being on one channel for the entire day. I really detest the ESPN/ESPN2/ABC switch around all on the same day. That’s just a horrible set-up in my mind. Heck, my DVR didn’t record all three this programs this Saturday (missed the part with the Goldikova race).

Yes

I saw the big TV numbers.

Something I am wondering if they should chase would be Versus. There’s a great debate among hockey fans on if it’s better to get the occasional game shown on the ESPN family or nearly wall to wall coverage(especially in the playoffs) on VS. The network keeps adding coverage every year, I believe it’s in almost the whole country now. Since it is owned by Comcast, they have been aggressive the last couple of years in going after programming to try and compete ESPN.

Obviously it’ll take awhile to get to that point, they aren’t going away soon. I watch college football on there if they have good games(typically they get MWC games and contests from the Big 12 or Pac-10 that aren’t marquee on paper but occasionally they have some very good match-ups, the famous Stanford upset over USC game 3 years ago was on VS). I tend to watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs over the NBA Playoffs. They’re always looking for programming, they’d probably carry Stakes races 20 weeks a year or more – to a national audience that doesn’t have TVG.

I don’t know, it was something I’ve been thinking about the last few weeks.

I agree with you completely

I think ESPN is great but it’s obvious that racing is way, way down on the list of priorities. The fact that they keep running that (pardon my language) f’in “Bottom Line” during all the races drives me nuts (I’m a big believer that if a network is running “info” crap at the bottom of the screen they don’t believe what’s on screen is important.) Watch the big events on ESPN, like Monday Night Football…there is no bottom line.

Anyway, I think the move from NBC to ESPN has been a bad one for the Breeders’ Cup because, frankly, ESPN doesn’t really give a shit. Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey are top notch, but the rest of the production is borderline ridiculous. I know I harp on this a lot, but the camera angles are just a a joke. Half of the Mile was shot from the blimp…I’m a hard core horse racing guy and I had no f’in clue where the horses were. Show me the blimp “after the race” not during.

I think VS would be a good move. They wouldn’t lose that much off of their traditional average ratings and they might get a group of people who actually care how they portray the sport from the production side, instead of trying to come up with “stories”.

I am a firm believer that great racing sells racing…not the fluff. People watched this weekend because Zenyatta was great. Yes, there were fluff stories around her but her fantastic recored drew in viewers.

Racing can sell itself, if it’s done right.

Fluff Stories

ESPN definitely over killed it (much like NBC usually does during the Triple Crown season), but the thing with racing is….it seems like almost EVERY story is a great story. I remember reading coverage of the Derby a few years ago where the reporter said something along the lines of – all 20 horses here are worthy of a movie made about them – and it’s kinda true. I’m not sure any sport has the amount of potential for those heart tugging fluff pieces.

ANYWAYS

I am just a poor dude in a crappy LA Apartment, and the folks who make these decisions blow more money in a year than I’ll see in a lifetime, but I totally would be trying to call VS up if i were in the NTRA. I’d imagine they’d love the chance to show some stuff. You might have some sort of turf wars (no pun intended) with TVG – but I think that could be overcome easily enough.

Eagle

I think the Vs. Idea is a great one. And I would love for the broadcast NOT to include Joe Tessatore, not because he is bad necessarily…he is not. He is just the VOICE OF FREAKIN’ FUTILITY to me! Seriously, though…even a network like TBS would treat the sport with more respect. Where I live, in WV, I couldn’t even watch the first four races on the local ABC affiliate because it opted for the Big East Game o the week – a ratings busting matchup of Louisville and Syracuse.

Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,
For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.

Joe Tessatore

Not a fan either.

I guess you’re in Big East Country, so they figured you’d like that game? Heheh. I guess with Syracuse’s surprising resurgence it actually had a lot of meaning in the conference race. Still seems like a poor decision on their part.
