Sidney's Candy heads to the lawn for the La Jolla Handicap
About a month ago I wondered if the connections of Sidney's Candy might think about putting him on the lawn given that he doesn't appear to be a horse suited to the mile and a quarter of the Classic, he's a question mark on dirt, and he's bred to perform well on grass. Apparently, the connections of Sidney's Candy have also been thinking along those same lines as they have entered him in Saturday's Grade 2 La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar.
If Sidney's Candy performs well on grass this weekend then the connections have a lot more options should they go forward with this colt to the Breeders' Cup. They could elect to run him in either the Turf Mile, the Dirt Mile, or they could still take a shot in the Classic. Getting a grass race under his belt in early August should make that decision a lot easier.

I think so...
It’s a so-so field with a few that have performed well at the G3 level – Leroy’s Dynameaux won the Will Rogers at Hollywood; Golden Itiz won the Affirmed on the main track – so he’s got a couple with a bit of backclass but there are no standouts in the field. I think he’s fits in well with this group and if he can transfer his main track form to the turf, or even improve on it a bit, I think he’ll be awfully tough to beat.
I’m curious to see what type of running style he utilizes on turf: will he still be a front-runner or can he stalk and pounce?

Hey Matt
sorry to hijack a thread, was just curious if you’ll be heading to Emerald Downs for the Longacres Mile in a couple weeks and if you know who might be running/who to look for etc.
No problem.
I am planning to head out to Emerald for the race … I’ll probably be out there most of the weekend.
I haven’t taken much of a look at the nominations for the race (I think they just closed this week) but the top local contender will be Doris Harwood’s Noosa Beach. It also looks like Gallant Son, who has been racing down in Southern California the past couple of years, is going to ship back up for the race. He was the top two year olds at Emerald a few years ago.
I’ll have a few previews up for the Mile starting early next week when the field starts to finalize a bit.
