DRF.com: Santa Anita to return to dirt this winter
I would hope that whomever Magna brings in to install the new surface that they understand how to build a proper drainage system.

Guess the CHRB caved
Since they were the ones that mandated the change in the first place a few years back.
Sounds like it.
Although I’ve read nothing in any articles that states that the CHRB has made any official announcement in terms of policy…but that would appear to be a formality given what Santa Anita is planning on doing.

I don't really care one way
…or the other. A lot of easterners don’t respect synthetic racing, but they never used to give western horses respect unless they went east and won anyways.
Breakdowns seem slightly less common on synthetic surfaces according to that report a month or two ago, but even they said they weren’t sure it was a significant difference.
So, good I guess? I just hate the owner of Santa Anita…real prick.
That kind of my feeling...
From a purely handicapping perspective, I’ve never understood the complaints about synthetic surfaces. Yes, they are different than dirt but races on synthetic aren’t the undecipherable mess that some in the industry claim that they are. I think it’s a non-issue in terms of betting.
From a horse health perspective, like you said, there are reports that say they are safer and then are reports that say there is little to no difference. Tough to know what to believe. If the trainers don’t like synthetics and feel they are harder on their horses, then I would defer to their opinion.
The thing that bothered me about the Santa Anita debacle is that no other track with a synthetic course had the same issues. Many in the industry have used SA as Exhibit A that “Synthetic tracks are broken” but no other track had drainage problems even remotely similar to SA.
Agree on the owner.
