Rachel Alexandra to face four in Personal Ensign

BALTIMORE - MAY 16: Jockey Calvin Borel rides Rachel Alexandra to the winners circle after winning the 134th Running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on May 16, 2009 in Baltimore, Maryland. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

UPDATE: The morning line odds are now posted for this race with Rachel Alexandra set as the 2/5 favorite.  Life At Ten, probably the classiest filly Rachel has faced in 2010, is pegged at 5/2.  Everyone else is in the land of long shots.

Looks easy?

At least to me me for RA. Small field too…must’ve chased a lot of people away.

Yeah, nobody wants to face her. Can't blame them, I suppose.

Life At Ten is a legitimate threat but she’s a “need-to-lead” type so she’ll have to do it all on the front end. That’s a tough ask against Rachel.

There are so many races for three year old fillies and also for older fillies that they become seriously diluted. I know it will never happen, but at some point somebody needs to completely overhaul the graded stakes listings and timing in this country.

I agree

But you really can’t ask tracks not to game Grade 1’s and 2’s on the same weekend. They’re trying to lure in horses/patrons as well, which is tougher and tougher these days.

True

Perhaps this leans more towards the question of “is there too many graded stakes for the current horse population?” I don’t know, and some of this is just me thinking out loud, but it just seems like so many of these stakes have six or fewer horses in them, especially with the fillies. I can see nobody wanting to run against Rachel or Zenyatta, that makes sense. But the stakes without those two still seem to come up very thin.
