The Great Match Race

Matt has a list of recommended reading on the site.  I've gone through my share of books on the sport (I like to read in general) and I'd really like to add John Eisenberg's  The Great Match Race about the 1823 duel(in 3 heats!) between Henry and Eclipse.  Incredibly engaging and really gives one an insight into the game as it stood nearly 200 years ago.

Maybe the best book on the sport I have read.

Thanks for the recommendation

I’m going to have to check that one out as I’ve been looking for a new horse racing book to read. Looks like that will be an Amazon purchase today.

Have you ever read anything really good about Man o’War? I’ve been thinking of picking something up on him but haven’t found anything that really sparked my interest.

Not really

I read a book on him a few years back, and it was alright. But it wasn’t as good as say Laura Hillenbrand’s Seabisuit or Nack’s one on Secretariat (probably my 2 favorite horse biographies).

I’d have to look for it again to see who wrote it. I p think I got it at the library, so give me some time. :-)

No problem

Agree on Seabiscuit and Secretariat. Great books.

Blood Horses

by John Jeremiah Sullivan is one of my favorite books, period and one my majors was literature, so you know I really do hold it in high esteem! It is not only a wonderful in that it is steeped in horse racing history, and Lexington, Ky. horse country, but it is also a father-son story. Seriously, it had me at hello.

Now is the time boys to make a big noise.

For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.

Great rec.

I’ll have to add that to my winter “must read” list.
