2011 Kentucky Derby Future Odds

LOUISVILLE, KY - APRIL 30: A view of Churchill Downs on April 30, 2010 in Louisville, Kentucky. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager won't open for several weeks but some Vegas casinos have offered future bets on the Derby since before the Breeders' Cup.  Below the jump you will find a list of the open/current future book odds for a selection of 2011 Kentucky Derby challengers.  You can find the complete Kentucky Derby Future Odds, as offered by the Wynn Las Vegas, at this link: 2011 Kentucky Derby Vegas Future Odds (via Brisnet.com).

A few of thoughts on the odds:

- I mentioned Tapizar as a horse I liked for a future wager back in December, a thought that is apparently not alone given the slashing of his future odds 60/1 to 8/1.  The December 14th odds were nice.  The current odds... not so much.

- Dialed In, who will make his three-year-old debut this Sunday in the Holy Bull, saw his odds drop from 40/1 to 25/1.  Now is the time to act on this colt if you're looking to get a piece of him for the Derby.  If he were to win on Sunday his odds will likely get cut in half.  25/1 isn't as nice as 40/1 but I'm surprised it's not a bit worse.

- Uncle Mo is obviously seeing a decent amount of money comes his way as his odds dropped from 6/1 to 4/1, and while 4/1 is probably higher than you'll get on Uncle Mo in the Derby (assuming he makes it there and has a relatively successful prep season) those odds are way too short given the risk associated with betting on a horse this far out.

- The last time I posted this list I didn't even look up Soldat's odds.  He now sits at 40/1.

- A relative newcomer to the list is Washington's Rules, a son or Roman Ruler out of a Silver Charm mare (Petite Charme).  Washington's Rules broke his maiden last Saturday in the fifth race at Gulfstream Park in a off-the-turf one mile MSW and, visually, it was a very, very nice performance.   However, the race came over a "Good" track and a field of horses that were pointed to a race on the lawn.  And while he displayed an off-the-pace style at Gulfstream (something he didn't show in his debut at Saratgoa in August) it's hard to tell whether that's his true running style or a result of the surface condition.  In short, he's a horse to keep an eye on but one with a bunch of questions marks.

Wasington's Rules sits at 85/1 on the future board.  Stay Thirsty, the horse that beat Washington's Rules in his debut at Saratoga, is currently at 40/1.

An additional note on the maiden race at Satartoga back on August 14th won by Stay Thirsty: with Washington's Rules winning on the 22nd that makes two starters from that race to win at next asking.  Heisman, who finished 6th to Stay Thirsty at Saratoga, won next out at Belmont in mid-September.  Additionally, 4th place Orsonian and 8th place Brock have yet to make their next starts following that race.

-Frankel at 75/1.  Oooookay.

The only reason I can see why the Wynn is offering odds on Frankel (England's champion two-year-old for 2010) is because somebody asked for it.  There is a zero percent chance that his connections would even think about running in the Derby.  Frankel is currently listed as the betting favorite by English bookmakers for the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket in April (which occurs one week before the Derby and which I will have the pleasure of attending this year); he's also considered a favorite for the Epsom Derby.

While Derby future bets are high-risk, low probability wagers, a bet on Frankel to win the 2011 Kentucky Derby is akin to flushing your money down the toilet.

I am interested to see what Mucho Macho Man

does this weekend. He ran a nice race against To Honor and Serve last out, definitely didn’t embarrass himself.

He's an interesting prospect, isn't he?

He hasn’t run a poor race in his career and if you look at the fields he’s faces he’s already run against To Honor and Serve, Culinello, Pants On Fire and Gourmet Dinner. He’s faced some decent competition.

The Holy Bull looks like a pretty evenly matched race.

After looking at the race, I think Black N Beauty has a shot if he can

handle the increase in class. He’s already won at the track and distance, speed figs have improved every time out and his pace figs show that he should be moving late. If Mucho Macho falters or maybe comes up a little shot due to the layoff, Black N Beauty could steal it at 6-1.

He's definitely a large threat

depending how the pace works out. I’m trying to figure out where Leave of Abscence will fit in. I think he’s got the speed to contest early, if he breaks well.

I like Sweet Ducky just a tad as a price price play. The race at Delta was pretty poor but I think he might be better suited for the one turn mile.

You're going to Newmarket for the Guineas?

Enjoy. Tis a good days racing. (Happy to buy you a pint if you’re going to be there)

(Also, if you are in UK the weekend before can highly recommend the Sandown meeting on Sat 23rd)

I am...and I'm really looking forward to it.

We’re going to be in England from the 14th through the 2nd. The 23rd we’re going to be in Yorkshire; my fiancée loves York and wanted to spend a day or two there.

I’’ve got a day at Windsor, Ascot and Epsom on the itinerary, and I’m looking for it in as much racing as I can (assuming it works with the wife’s schedule!).

Any suggestions for other courses to see? I’d like to take in a jump meeting for the first time.

Sounds like a good trip is on the cards :)

Guessing you will be based round London way somewhere from the tracks you mention visiting. If so you have pretty much got it right. Two of the three best midweek racedays during your trip are the Epsom and Ascot meetings scheduled.
Would class Epsom as the must see, a truly unique racecourse – hill, turn, camber etc :)
Ascot is Ascot.
Windsor evening meetings on a sunny day are popular, busy nights at the races. Not so much fun if weather poor/it rains though as indoor facilities get very (too) crowded when outside facilities not being used.

On the jump racing front – is the end of the season proper. The last two big meetings are in Scotland on 16th (a bit far to do in a day!) or the Sandown one mentioned. After that most of the fixtures on during your stay will be much the same standard so the meeting that fits best into your schedule best is literally as good a meeting as any other. Do them all

If in Yorkshire around Easter you might like Middleham Open Day (do see your fiance’s point re York, great city in a great part of the world)

Oh – and pack a suit. Dress code applies at big meetings like the Guineas.

Thanks for the information.

We’ll be in London the first week, then a few days in Leeds with trips to York and other spots around Yorkshire, and then back to London for the last week (just in time for the Royal wedding). I was last in England a little over 20 years ago right before I began high school; it’s taken too long for a return trip.

I’ve been telling my girl that she needs a hat and a nice dress for the Guineas Festival. She’s not normally into hats.

If you’re out at Newmarket for the Guineas I’d love to grab a pint.
