ORIGINAL POST: The second and final day of the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Contest will kick off in a couple of hours.
Below is the leaderboard for the Top 10 after Day 1 (link to full leaderboard), along with the mandatory plays for Day 2. I added a column on the leaderboard for each players "Per Play Average", which is essentially their total divide by the total number of plays in the day, 15. In short, leader Thomas Anderson averaged $12.13 total (both win and place) per $2 Win/Place bet. I've also tossed in the ROI. (Tables appear best on "wide" setting.)
Leaderboard after Day 1
Pos. Name Day 1 Day 2 Total PPA ROI 1 Thomas Anderson $182.00 $0.00 $182.00 $12.13 $2.03 2 Ron Geary $171.60 $0.00 $171.60 $11.44 $1.86 3 Yu Death $108.40 $0.00 $108.40 $7.23 $0.81 4 Russell Priola $108.00 $0.00 $108.00 $7.20 $0.80 5 James Templin III $107.00 $0.00 $107.00 $7.13 $0.78 6 Alan Hasher $106.60 $0.00 $106.60 $7.11 $0.78 7 Christopher Larmey $106.40 $0.00 $106.40 $7.09 $0.77 8 Mike Mayo $105.40 $0.00 $105.40 $7.03 $0.76 9 Jerry Barash $104.40 $0.00 $104.40 $6.96 $0.74 10 Steve Stupka $102.20 $0.00 $102.20 $6.81 $0.70

4:15 PM - The mandatory plays are all done which leaves us two races at Santa Anita and two at Golden Gate to round out the contest.
3:35 PM - Things start to settle down around the country as the prices in the last two mandatory races (Oaklawn and Golden Gate) end up on the low side. The leaderboard hasn't been updated since the 5th mandatory.
2:28 PM - The current leader of NHC XII is Ron Geary, President and CEO of Ellis Park in Kentucky. After four mandatory races he about an $8 lead on 2nd place.
1:35 PM - The mandatory races are all producing good priced winners; the $12 winner in 5th at AQU is the lowest mandatory race payout on the day.
12:26 PM - Tampa spits out it's third $20+ winner on the day. Just huge prices coming in today at that track.
11:30 AM - Oaklawn and the Big A kick off the mandatory plays with a couple of $10+ winners. With the way these early races have unfolded it would appear that a big Day 2 score will be required to win.
11:05 AM- Tampa continues to kick out $20+ winners after Capt. Zippounas wins the 3rd at odds of 10/1.
10:27 AM - Gulfstream gets into the mix with their first $20+ horse of the day. Contest players that love the Florida tracks are probably in good spirits.
10:13 AM - The first bomb of the day comes in the 2nd at Tampa, and it's a cap horse at that.
9:40 AM - The day gets off to a strange beginning at the Big A where the winner, 8-King David J, was running for purse money only. Second place finisher Estimator was your winner in terms of betting. 3rd place finisher, Little Wise Guy, paid $12.60 to place.
Over at Tampa, a 1/5 shot won for fun in the first.

AQU and TAM kick off the day around 9:30 Pac
but the first mandatory doesn’t kick in for almost another 90 minutes.
"A bad day at the track is better than a good day at the office."
OH NO
The 8 was my key in first at AQ.
It wins and I still cant bet it.
I’m thinking I should just quit for the day now.. Bad bad omen!
I liked the winner...
but only because of Leparoux. I’ll pretty much play anything he rides on the lawn down there unless it’s completely hopeless.

Lot's of heavy chalk early at TAM
1/5 in the first and the 4/5 in the 2nd looks awfully strong.
I can’t find much to like at TAM today other than the 6th race where I love the 7 at that 12/1 ML>
"A bad day at the track is better than a good day at the office."
Agree...I like how he looks on paper
on the tote? Not so much.

Actually, I just missed the 2nd at TAM
Did I see that right? 40/1 winner?

They closed out the day with a $89 winner yesterday
Just spittin’ out 40/1 shots all over the place.

Like my dad always said
You can’t bet’em all. Nothing wrong with the two. Just had to limit the ticket price
Good call to go against the 6
He was done on the turn.

I got nothing in the 2nd at GP
Waiting for the 3rd so I can play the Kitten’s Joy firster.
"A bad day at the track is better than a good day at the office."
I love these Kitten's Joy firsters on the lawn
Been good plays for a while. I don’t like the rail draw or the workout gap at the end of Nov., but I’m willing to take a shot if he stays 6/1 or higher.

And he’s a decent price at 7/2

That's my biggest concern with this one
If he’s anywhere else I’d have no reservations with a nice win bet but I hate firsters on the rail.

True - alive in the pick 4 (along with everybody else)
Aqueduct, Race 2, $1.00 PK4 3 / 3 / 1,3,4 / 1,3,4,7
Aqueduct, Race 2, $1.00 PK4 3 / 1-5 / 3 / 7
Aqueduct, Race 2, $1.00 PK4 3,5 / 3 / 3,4 / 1,3
Lets see if any of these cash
The 7 would pay nicely

and a Pick 4?
"A bad day at the track is better than a good day at the office."
by Matt Gardner on Jan 29, 2011 2:36 PM EST up reply actions
Yep
For the most part its all I bet. It worked out OK. I made a few bucks with the 4 – but I did have a chance at 800 bucks between the pick3 and 4 if the longshot 7 won.
Late Pick 4 at AQ
Aqueduct, Race 6, $1.00 PK4 2,3,13 / 5,11 / 6 / 2,12
I like the 2 in the first leg a lot
Especially since there isn’t a ton of speed in the field.

36 bucks in the 1 wins.
Gulfstream, Race 5, $1.00 PK3 1,4 / 4 / 3,9
I like how you rolled those Pick 3s
With the 1 you single in the last leg and the 1 & 4 in the first leg of the other. I tend to play that way a lot.

I'll just say this...
Jessica Is Back is they type of horse I absolutely hate. She’ll run evenly several races in a row (or even clunkers) and them pop up and run huge out of nowhere. She may have lost the headbob, but just the fact that she ran so big drives me crazy.

It'll make tommorow more fun
If I lost today I was gonna take tommorrow off. Its snowing like crazy here agin and I dont really want to leave the house.
Looks like I should buy some forms for sunday.
SA
You know if the track is fair, I think the 9 wins easy. You just cant come from far back at SA right now.
Very true
I’ll be watching some of the better performing off-the-pace types at the end of the SA meet before they switch to Hollywood. They could be decent overlays.
