The top three finalists for each Eclipse Award were announced today by the NTRA, the Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters. Blame and Zenyatta, expectedly, headline Horse of the Year finalists, with Goldikova (IRE) snaring the final spot.

It's tough to quibble with the finalists, although I would have included Sidney's Candy for three-year-old male instead of Eskendereya. I don't think that's a horrible omission, but it seems like Sidney's Candy did more throughout the whole year.

Pretty Impressive

That Goldikova got in the top 3 with one one stat in North America. Unexpected, but deserved.

She might have got in the top 3 with just one vote

I don’t know if you saw the piece over at DRF.com, but Alan Shuback cast his HOY vote for Goldikova. Last year all the votes went to RA and Zen, so I’m guessing that he’s the only one that didn’t vote for Blame or Zenyatta.

I Guess...

it is good to have your name end in “-ez” if you are a jock, huh?

Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,
For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.

Guess so

That was another category that I had a minor difference with. Gomez and Velazquez got the numbers but I would have thought Rosario might have squeaked into the top 3 ahead of Dominguez.

Even though he didn't have the heavy hitter races

Bejarano was a hell of a Jockey. His win and in the % percentage was ahead of anyone but Dominguez pretty much. His money numbers were up there too. If Rosario is to be considered, doesn’t Bejarano also have to be?

Completely agree.

I don’t get the Dominguez vote at all. Not a bad jockey but, like you said, I think there are others that are better. His earnings were huge in 2010 and (I’m guessing) a bunch of voters just looked at the $$$ and wrote his name in.

And how does anybody vote on bug boy of the year?

I’d like to think I follow the game pretty close but I would have no clue if I had to come up with a top three of apprentice jockeys each year. That seems like a category to take the guy with the most wins and cash and hand him the trophy.

Honestly

Sad perhaps, but I don’t really care who wins. That was last year. I’m much more concerned with finding a single in the Pick 4 sequence this weekend.

Now… if one of the owners was going to send me a big check if they win HOY.. that would be another matter.

Funny.. but its the one difference I have between horse racing and other sports. In football etc.. I watch, enjoy and revel in MY team winning – I can then look to next year etc.

I suppose, for me, it's interesting from a historical context...

Winners each year join a list of names from the’ past. But like any award, there’s so much subjectivity involved that it really doesn’t decide anything. Plus, comparing horses, especially if they’ve never raced against each other (or run on different surfaces and distances), is almost impossible to do.

I find the divisional awards interesting since many of those contenders have run against each other, or under similar conditions, all year long. Horse of the Year? Eh, for me that’s a bit too nebulous of a title. Some times it’s easy when you have Secretariat, Seattle Slew or Affirmed.
