BREEDERS' CUP 2011: Royal Delta Cruises In The Ladies' Classic

LOUISVILLE, KY - NOVEMBER 04: Royal Delta, ridden by Jose Lezcano, crosses the finish line to win the Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic during the 2011 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs on November 4, 2011 in Louisville, Kentucky. (Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)

Sitting off of a slow pace set by 2011 Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty, 2/1 favorite Royal Delta powered to the front in the final furlongs to win the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic in relatively easy fashion at Churchill Downs.  It's Tricky got up for the place and Pachattack rounded out the trifecta.

Fractions:
1/4: 24.18
1/2: 49.00
3/4: 1:13.72
Mile: 1:38.12
Finish: 1:50.78

Internal Splits:
1/4: 24.18
1/2: 24.82
3/4: 24.72
Mile: 24.40
Finish: 12.66

The victory by Royal Delta in the Ladies' Classic wrapped up a fairly wild first day of the 2011 Breeders' Cup, a day that would see a parade logical horses mixed in with 20/1 shockers.

2011 Breeders' Cup Results

Star-divide

  • Bob Baffert's Secret Circle ($2.80) got the day started by dominating the inaugural running of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint.
  • In the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Stephanie's Kitten ($14.20) unleashed a furious late charge to deny a game Stopshoppingmaria in the final furlongs.
  • The first bomb of the day rolled home in the Filly & Mare Sprint when Musical Romance ($42.20) skimmed the rail and held off Switch and Her Mile.
  • My Miss Aurelia ($6.20) proved that she is the real deal by dominating the Juvenile Fillies as the 2/1 favorite.
  • In almost a replay of last year's race, Perfect Shirl used a strong late run to upset the favored Europeans and win the Filly & Mare Turf.  Last year, Shared Account pulled off a similar feat when she beat Midday (GB).

Yeah, that race played out kind of as expected.

Not a lot of drama in deep stretch.

The Double to Uncle Mo is quite a bit higher than it is to Havre de Grace. I think we’ll see him drift up in odds tomorrow, if these are any indication as to how the public views his chances.

Call me Dan Doner

I hope the good participants of this blog took home some of the money I donated today. Enjoyed the gaming at a little off-track joint called Joe’s in Centralia, WA. I was swinging for the fences with the pick 4’s and superfectas while the seasoned vets grinded it out. It was better than a day at the office.

I Think...

I may start paying less attention to the Friday portion of the card. I preferred it when it was just 8 races on a Saturday. I guess I like all of the different divisions getting some play, but it is a lot of work the way I do it, and 15 races just forces me to spread the bankroll a little thinner. In future, I think I will focus on small plays on Ladies Day.

Pick 6 carry over

ESPN made note about one person having a shot at $899,000 on the Pick 6, but it didn’t hit. Am I correct the money carries over to the last 6 races tomorrow, including the 12th that is not a BC race? I think you wrote about that earlier this week, Matt.

No, the Pick 6 was hit. I think ESPN mis-stated the situation.

Although, I kind of like the monitor yellers.

I was at Arlington Park a few years ago and I was simulcasting Saratoga. A guy standing next to me went balistic during one race, just screaming at the jockey…er, the TV. I had to walk away because I was starting to laugh uncontrollably, not because I was happy he lost, but because it was so ridiculous what he was yelling at the TV…a machine! I figured if he saw me laughing things might get ugly.

Turf Sprint

I think the Turf Spring is wide open.

In the turf I like Byword, #8 who will be 12-15:1.

I'm starting to come back to Drill in the Juvenile

He disappointed in that race at Santa Anita, but Baffert really thought he’d be better on dirt than he was on synthetics. 8/1 isn’t bad, but I’d love to see 10/1 or 12/1 on him at post time.

Drill

It seems that something was bothering him the whole way in that SA race – - did you happen to see any replay?

by Swale on Nov 4, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I Haven't Really Looked Yet...

that is another of the things I think I dislike about the two-day setup. It is a bit wearying tome to be in the heat of battle, handicapping and wagering all day, and then have to look ahead to tomorrow right away. I prefer fresh eyes, so I am probably going to sit here and drink a couple of more beers and then go to bed.

With that said, I know from my math that at least six races tomorrow – the sprint, the turf sprint, the dirt mile, the juvenile, the turf mile, and the Classic have what I’d call potential “Chaos” pace scenarios. So from a fig perspective that means I have interest in Aikenite, Perfect Officer, Tapizar, Drill, Turalure, Flat Out, and Ruler On Ice, in their respective races. That is without looking at any of their PP’s though….just the math.

I agree with that...

I like the extra races but the two day format is much more draining than the single day. I’d rather run 15 in one day than split the two up.

I kind of agree with JP. During the Triple Crown I get excited a week in advance and study one race. This is kind of like work. I always thought it would be cool to hang around the track, bs’n with the trainers. I’ve got to step up my game.

Watch Out!

It’s addictive. Related to what I was saying above, I think it is good to vary your routine. I find myself sometimes reaching “paralysis by analysis” where every horse looks too good to throw out. In that book I mentioned, Brad Free says something that I frequently cite to myself when building wagers: “be bold, or be wrong.” That really is the key to this game: have an opinion about a race, and stay true to that opinion as you bet.

You’re right, though. It is work. But as Matt’s tag says: “a bad day at the track is better than a good day at the office.”

Sad story

The other day I was surfing DRF and took a link to a handicapper Nick somebody or other. It caused a virus to my computer. First time ever for me. So I called DRF in the morning to let them know and as I was walking through what page of theirs was infected, the customer service rep had to put me on hold because her computer got the bug. I don’t know why she needed to prove to herself. Anyway, they removed the link quickly after that.
