BREEDERS' CUP 2011: Saturday Results And Open Thread

It's been a long and winding road through this year's racing calendar, much of which will culminate this afternoon at Churchill Downs on the second day of the 2011 Breeders' Cup. The first race of the day at Churchill Downs will go to post at 12:05pm Eastern, with the first Breeders' Cup race, the Marathon, slated for 1:20pm.  The Marathon will be broadcast on TVG, not ESPN/ABC.

You can find a running tally of all of the weekend's results at the link below:

2011 Breeders' Cup Entries and Results

Race Post TV Race Winner
3 1:20 / 10:20 TVG Marathon Afleet Again
4 2:02 / 11:02 ABC Juvenile Turf Wrote (IRE)
5 2:37 / 11:37 ABC Sprint Amazombie
6 3:21 / 12:21 ABC Turf Sprint Regally Ready
7 4:01 / 1:01 ESPN Dirt Mile Caleb's Posse
8 4:45 / 1:45 ESPN Turf St Nicholas Abbey
9 5:25 / 2:25 ESPN Juvenile Hansen
10 6:07 / 3:07 ESPN Mile Court Vision
11 7:00 / 4:00 ESPN Classic Drosselmeyer

  • Afleet Again shocks the Marathon as the longest price on the board (41/1).

AU Miner and Meeznah were eased during the race.  Meeznah was suffering from fatigue and should be okay.  AU Miner suffered fractures in the fetlock joint and is still being assessed.
  • The Europeans dominate the Juvenile Turf, finishing 1st, 3rd and 4th.  Wrote (IRE) was much the best.
  • Big prices continue to roll home today.  Amazombie wins the Sprint, finishing off an early $0.50 Pick 5 that returns a fat $71,510.80.

2/1 favorite Jackson Bend rallied for 3rd but didn't threaten the winner.
  • A small amount of order is restored as 2/1 choice Regally Ready dominates the Turf Sprint and puts and end (at least temporarily) to the double digit winners on Breeders' Cup Saturday.
  • Caleb's Posse unleashed a powerful late kick to run past Shackleford and win the Dirt Mile.
  • St Nicholas Abbey powers past Brilliant Speed in the stretch to win the Turf, the second Aidan O'Brien horse to win on Saturday.
  • Hansen makes every yard a winning one to take the Juvenile.  Union Rags has a troubled trip to finish second.
  • Court Vision held off Turallure in a wild Mile to score at boxcar odds.  Goldikova (IRE) briefly led in the stretch but couldn't put away her rivals.  She finished third.

Star-divide

gooood morning!

I have a family event today so won’t get to start watching until about the dirt mile. Even then we’ll have people at the house so not much blogging today until they leave.

My picks are in. Some good info at www.nyra.com from Andy Sterling preview.

Good luck to all – I hope I read of some big tickets later tonight.

Good luck to you, as well!

Got to start it off proper today. Brigantin in marathon

Time to make it all back...

or something like that!

The last three BCs at Churchill have really kicked my butt. Santa Anita and Monmouth were pretty good to me. CD… not so much.

Derby day usually isn't too bad for me,

at least the undercard. The Derby itself is pretty much a crap shoot. But these Breeders’ Cups have whooped up on me. I know many people hated the fact that the BC was on synthetic in 08 and 09, but those were two of the best BCs I’ve ever had. Belmont in 05 wasn’t bad, either.

Early pick 4 looks impossible.

Yeah, it's a tough sequence. They are all pretty tough today.

That Juve Turf race looks incredibly wide open. Could be some huge prices early on today.

For some reason, I really like Harrison's Cave in the Marathon

Should get the trip, has run on standard tracks in England, and he’s at a huge 30/1 on the ML. Plus, he seems like the kind of overlooked horse that could run well in a race like the Marathon.

Yeah, again I thought she had it

Just not the acceleration she used to have.

+1

speaks volumes for how much the racing public like and respect the mare that at Ascot, Longchamp, Churchill Downs (all around the globe) the racing fans have backed her into favourite regardless of where she turns up this year and in whatever form she turns up. She will be missed.

Don't know if we'll see another one like her in terms of longevity.

She’s run at such a high level for so long… you just never think it will end.

It’s been a pleasure to follow her career these last four years.

Those will pays are... um, large

For those that can’t see them:

Pix Six will pay $2,210,381 to two horses: Ruler On Ice and Rattlesnake Bridge. It goes 5-of-6 to everyone else.

Nothing like replaying a horrible on-track death before one of the biggest races of the year...

I always felt really bad for Larry Jones after Eight Belles. He didn’t deserve the venom he received from people who knew nothing about the sport.

It was a good story though

Usually they have way too many of the human interest bits, but that was was nice to see.

It was. I shouldn't be such a cynic.

I’m glad to see Larry Jones back training horses. He’s one of the good guys.

That's exactly what I've been thinking

I loved him at 6/1 when the line came out. I guess everybody is thinking the same thing. Uncle Mo cold on the board at 5/1. I guess Repole hasn’t made his bet yet.

I llike Flat Out a lot in this spot

The 7/2 isn’t making me happy, but I think he’s coming into the race in great shape and I loved the way he worked at CD this week.

I could see a lot of different winners in this race

I don’t think I’ll be surprised by any…except Ice Box.

That's not much different than me.

A win bet on Caleb’s Posse helped ease the bleeding but didn’t close the gap.

Fractions were honest, but not insane

but the race falls apart. Mike Smith cleans it up in the stretch.

Probably Havre de Grace but it’s wide, wide open.

I also think she wins

By default really, because no one really leaps off the page. And she has the best overall record I think This was her only effort out of the money.

by LAEagle on Nov 5, 2011 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Honestly, it hasn’t been a great year for consistent horses. Other than Havre and Acclamation there have been lots of ups and downs.

Thank You, Turallure!

It was a long slow bleed-out for me until the 10th at Churchill, when Turralure keyed an Exacta and dime super for me that resulted in a a 2300 dollar score. So we cleared a grand for the day. Proof that staying true to your method is worth it, becuase we missed so narrowly on just about every race today.

I hope you all took home some money as well! I hate to see the racing season come to a close….

Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,
For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.

How bout that Turfway Horse today?

It was nice to see some horses that I’m familiar with the last couple of days, though none faired to well other than Hansen. Dean’s Kitten and Stately Victor have been out at Turfway a few times though and I think there may have been some others. Anyway, apparently the owner of Hansen is from my stomping grounds and I loved his guarrantee that he’ll be kissing the winner’s circle in May. It’s not likely I know, but I’ll be pulling for him. I’ll definitely be betting the heck out of him if he goes to the Lane’s End this year lol.

One thing that pissed me off royally though was that out of all the races today, the only one they knocked the winner on was the Juvenile. Goldikova loses and it’s because she’s old. Drosselmeyer pulls and upset and he gets praise. Hansen wins and the first thing they say is this is one of those races where the horse that wins wasn’t the best horse in the race. WTF lol. It may have been true, but jeeze they made it sound like it was just nothing but luck for Hansen. That horse hung in there tough.

by btalbert29 on Nov 5, 2011 11:57 PM EDT reply actions

I thought they slighted Hansen, too

Union Rags did have a bad trip but Hansen was extremely game; he ran a fantastic race and deserved more credit.
