Super Breeding
Last week I wrote about the foal produced by Sea The Stars and Zarkava over in Europe. This week has seen the mating of Rachel Alexandra to Curlin, and Zenyatta to Bernardini.
For those keeping score, those matings involve the last four winners of Horse of the Year (Curlin - 2007, Curlin - 2008, Rachel Alexandra - 2009, Zenyatta - 2010), and the HOY runner-up in 2006 (Bernardini).

Which means..
That the rich will get richer… and the rest of us will be betting 2500 buck claimers at Bulah.
Does Jess Jackson
Still own Curlin and Rachel Alexandra, or did their breeding rights get sold? I’m just wondering if the foal would be sold or if they’ll keep the horse to race it themselves.
It’s easy to get excited over these foals, but watch them be life time claimers. For the sake of the sport(though both will be retired promptly after their 3 year old campaign) it would be awesome to see to super colts come out of this. Actually maybe it would be better for 2 super fillies instead. That way they may not be retired right away.
I'm gonna guess
That these horses will sell for a boatload – and not deliver at all. Especially the offspring of Zenyatta – she was a freak in both size and running style.
I’d take the Rachel offspring first. Of course , I’m not a gazillionaire so I’m probably a few bucks short
Do you think they'll sell the first foals right way?...I'm not sure.
I think it’s more likely the Mosses try to run the Zenyatta foal themselves, at least the first one. Who knows what Jackson will do….since a lot of his best horses are ones he bought off others after they’ve already run and been successful…at least it seems like it.

I'm not sure what the ownership is with Curlin...
it’s always been a bit convoluted. I think he still owns a piece of him, if not the majority. I’m pretty sure he still owns Rachel. I’d be surprised if he sells the foal.
Yeah, the odds that any of these foals become Grade 1 winners is pretty remote…but it’s still fun to wonder “what if”.

I knew Curlin's Situation
Was always complicated. The way Jackson talked back when he obtained Rachel, it seemed as though he was pretty excited to breed them, but I didn’t get the impression that it was because he was going to make a boatload off of the foal.
One good thing, at least, is Curlin was not only a great horse, but he didn’t seem to be prone to injury. I always hate when an owner retires a horse have a hoof or leg problem, and then they go breed the horse. Seems like it happens quite a bit. Seems like it depletes the gene pool a little.
Or a horse that bleeds through Lasix...
I can’t remember the name of the horse, but there was one several years ago that was a noted bleeder…he would bleed through Lasix. They sent him to stud where he could pass that on. Brutal. Sometimes I wish our breeding restrictions were…well, stricter.
