2011 SANTA ANITA DERBY RESULT: Midnight Interlude Gives Bob Baffert His 6th Santa Anita Derby Win

Bob Baffert's top gun in the Santa Anita, Jaycito, may have scratched out, but that didn't stop him from winning his record 6th Santa Anita Derby with 6-Midnight Interlude (13/1) in an all-out drive to the wire.  Runner-up 5-Comma to the Top ran a game 2nd after setting the fractions each and every step of the way.  3-Mr. Commons got up to hold third at the wire.

Midnight Interlude paid $29.20, $12.00, and $6.00.  The exacta came back at sweet $113.60 for $1.

1/4 1/2 3/4 Mile Finish
Fractions 22.81 47.33 1:11.53 1:36.05 1:48.66
Internal 22.81 24.52 24.20 24.52 12.61
1/4 1/2 3/4 Mile Finish
Midnight Interlude 23.17 24.37 24.35 24.44 12.34
Comma to the Top 22.81 24.52 24.20 24.52 12.63
Mr. Commons 23.34 24.45 24.18 24.25 12.84

Although Midnight Interlude didn't finish up as well as Toby's Corner in the Wood, he still came home in a respectable 12.34 for the final 1/8th of a mile, a final furlong that saw Comma to the Top drift out a bit in to his path.  Overall, it's a pretty strong performance by a colt that broke his maiden less than a month ago.

He ran a huge race...

Definitely his best this year.

He might not be a 10 furlong colt but he should do well if they put him in a bunch of stakes at a mile, especially at HOL where he’s run so well in the past.

Midnight Interlude

That horse ran a really nice Derby style winning race – including being checked in the early stretch. Did you see that? Comma came over and Midnight still got around, accelerated and up for the win. I was impressed.

What do we think about the times in that race? Do we have any correlations on horses at SA running well and then maintaining that on eastern tracks? It seems a high percentage of them are staying in California.

Time-wise it was faster than AQU on Saturday...

but the final split was a tick or two slower….but it was still a pretty good race all around. And, like you, I thought Midnight Interlude ran a very nice race considering the trouble he got into on the turn and then Comma coming out in the stretch.

It’s tough to win the Derby after breaking your maiden in March (to say the least), but he’s won’t be facing the toughest group of Derby contenders.
