PREAKNESS 2011: Derby Winners In The Preakness Since 1986
Over the last 25-years, all but one winner of the Kentucky Derby has gone on to race at Pimlico in the Preakness. The only exception during that time frame was Grindstone, the 1996 Derby winner that was retired five days after the Derby due to bone chips in his knee. The other 24 horses that have gone on to race in the Preakness have had a good deal of success. Since 1986, nine Derby winners have won at Pimlico, six have finished 2nd, and three have finished 3rd, for an overall in-the-money success rate of 18-for-24 (75%).
Below is a list of Kentucky Derby winners and their Preakness finish since 1986.

Looking at that list brings back a lot of memories
I’ve always been kinda partial to the Preakness as far as the TC is concerned. It is definitely overshadowed by the Derby, and the Belmont (maybe even in non TC try years simply because the distance and it’s in the Big Apple) – and yet it’s probably my favorite of the three.
I know what you mean
It’s the race that decides whether we have any shot at a TC and it has produced some great moments over the years. SunSilence and Easy Goer, Street Sense and Curlin…

Hey matt love your blog
Im aware of the recent history of the Preakness, but I refuse to bet the chalk this weekend. I think this year were due for a longshot. First Dude almost held on last year, how do you think the probable pacesetters fare this year? I’m tempted to bet Flashpoint for the win…any thoughts? Dance City? Mr Commons? Im not considering Shackleford because I think hes a known quantity and wont be able to match his Derby performance
Of the price horses...
man, tough to pick. I’m starting to warm up to Dance City – that Arkansas Derby has turned out to be a very solid race so it’s probably foolish for me to toss a colt like him aside. I don’t know about Sway Away – I though he’d run much better at OP but he seemed to run even, at best.
I don’t like Flashpoint – if he beats me, so be it. Don’t like the pedigree or the ability to take them all the way on the front end. Perhaps Wesley Ward has been able to teach him to rate over the past two months, but I’m going to play against him.
Norman A. is the wildcard for me and I’ll probably use him in some spots.

Is anyone else completely beaten down by Zito
telling everyone how great Dialed In ran in the Derby? I am so sick of him and his “that was the best 8th place in the history of the Derby.” The horse walked for half the race, hence the nice late kick. Slow pace or no slow pace, the horse still came in 8th and lost by 7.
The Angels physically disgust me.
