Morning gents

Just read Dwyre’s pro Animal Kingdom/Preakness breakkdown column in the LA Times (yeah I still read the paper – dying breed I know), Sort of surprised VS doesn’t start coverage earlier today.

Looks like a beautiful day in Baltimore for racing.

by LAEagle on May 21, 2011 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

I'm old school, too.

I love the feel of the paper. Probably why I still buy books instead of using an e-reader. It’s kind of like the racing form – I’ll print out pdf’s but I love to buy the newsstand copy.

Yeah, I prefer real books too.

I seem to find that I lose focus easier reading long columns and or books on the net. When I have a physical copy I am more “there” for some reason. Plus, the Times has a lot of great stories I usually would never find in the online version when I would usually just scour the headlines.

by LAEagle on May 21, 2011 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know how it is in LA with the Times...

but the Seattle Times is so small now it’s almost comical. The actual size of the paper was decreased a while back (it’s not as wide) and many sections, especially the sports section, are really thin on content. It’s too bad.

First route race on the card....

the even money favorite, #5, sets the pace at 48.12 and 1:12+ and then packs it in at the top of the stretch. and finishes well back.

4 and 5 look really strong but I like the 6 coming from off the pace if the track continues to be a bit on the tiring side.

Did Preakness three times BEFORE they stopped allowing outside alcohol. It was three times too many. Like nothing you will ever see….

Needless to say, now I just do the clubhouse on Black-Eyed Susan Day and stay home with some friends for Preakness. It’s a fun weekend in Baltimore no matter where you are though. Nice for people to care about horse racing even if it is just one weekend of the year.

That's what I'm looking at right now...

that’s a tough call….Paddy runs decently off the pace and on good ground so he might be really tough to beat. Horses coming back from the Breeders’ Cup seem to, more often than not, need a race. I just can’t find anyone I really like in the 11th, other than the horse that scratched.

Pimlico today

the first couple of races seemed like the track “could” be a little slow or tiring today…that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore as speed (at least in a couple of sprint races) is holding and the factions are really picking up.

Unfortunately, this happens every year over here.

And there is no rhyme or reason to it. On Derby day they showed the Woodford but today they skip the Dixie. Who knows what they’ll do on Belmont day.

The major problem is that HRTV, who has the right to Pimlico, can’t show that race when NBC is on the air due to contractural obligations. This is way too typical.

I would think so....

Romans thinks Shack doesn’t need the lead but I haven’t seen that in his prior races. Seems like he needs to run right up there to be at his best.

I think Astrology needs to go harder early. I don’t think he has the speed to do that for very long, but sitting 4th or 5th along the rail would be a bad spot for him.

I had trouble making a case for him...

I love horse for course angles but probably will only use him deep in 3rd or 4th slot.

Finally got the Dixie chart

all four route races on the turf go 1:40+ for the mile. Really, really slow on the lawn out there today. The 13th race on the card is 8.5f on the grass.

Weird race

I don’t like the favorite at all. Not just at the price, I just don’t like him in this race, especially with a fast pace.

There are still questions...

hard to place his Derby win into context when there is so little to go on. My question is “how far back will he be early?”

I feel the same with this race as I did the Derby...

there isn’t a horse in the field that I really “love”. I can’t remember the last Triple Crown year where there wasn’t a horse that I really, really liked at each stage.
