Just For Fun - A Memorial Day All-Stakes Contest

1820bwc_medium

via www.businesscartoons.co.uk

Thanks to the addition of so many contests over at twinspires.com, my brother and I have been in full NHC practice mode for some months now.  Sadly, no contest site anywhere thought to take advantage of 14, count 'em, 14 stakes races on this Memorial Day, which means we get the chance here at The Stretch to practice on our own.  I've chosen to use the 11 races that the site's proprietor, Matt, mentioned in his weekend preview from a few days ago.

 Today's contest races:

Leg 1 - Lone Star 4, Ouija Board Distaff Stakes, Grade III (Turf), Post: 3:59 EST

Leg 2 - Lone Star 6, Dalllas Turf Cup Stakes, 150K (Turf), PostL 4:55 EST

Leg 3 - Churchill Downs 9, Winning Colors Stakes, Grade III, Post: 4:59 EST

Leg 4 - Belmont 9, Sands Point Stakes, Grade II (Turf), Post: 5:16 EST

Leg 5 - Monmouth 11, Violet Stakes, Grade III (Turf), Post: 5:33 EST

Leg 6 - Belmont 10, Metropolitan Handicap, Grade I, Post: 5:49 EST

Leg 7 - Lone Star 8, Lone Star Derby, 200K, (Turf), Post: 5:51 EST

Leg 8 - Lone Star 9, Lone Star Park Handicap, Grade III, Post: 6:19 EST

Leg 9 - Golden Gate 8, Berkeley Stakes, Grade III, Post: 7:25 EST

Leg 10 - Hollywood 8, Los Angeles Handicap, Grade III, Post: 7:41 EST

Leg 11 - Hollywood 9, Gamely Stakes, Grade I, Post: 8:11 EST

As we remember the deeds and sacrifices of our armed forces today, we are employing the standard NHC Qualifier rules.  Players make a mythical $2 Win and $2 Place wager on a single horse per entry.  Highest total after the eleven races is the winner, and payouts are capped at 20-1 for win, and 10-1 for place.  You may play a maximum of three entries.  Put your picks for each race in the comments section prior to the race going off.

My personal goal for winning a tournament of this type - online, all mandatory races - would be a total of $110, so if you hit that number, know that you have done pretty well.

Good Luck!

Have fun guys

I just don’t have the heart today after deciding not to spend 18 bucks and include the Slane Castle (70 beyer- fit right in) horse in the last leg of the Pick 5 at Hollywood on Saturday. 60K payoff. Instead I got three conso for 600. This one hurt as my key horses won the first four races.. I’m depressed.

Gonna take this week off. Vienna Austria next week and get back at it after that. Enjoy your holiday

Have a good time in Vienna.

Hopefully that will help erase the HOL pain.

I Hate Stories Like That....

I have a bunch of them! Most recently, on Derby Day when 88 dollars more in bets would have netted me 48 grand. Sympathies, Duck….

Lone Star 4

Tough to find my to like other than the heavy favorite, Wasted Tears. I like 7-Slide On Bye at 8/1…but I’m basically hoping that the fav is rusty off the layoff…something that is probably unlikely.

Picks...

Wasted Tears does look to be the one to beat, but a couple of others intrigue me. I like that the 2-Cherry Pink, flashed a seventh to 3rd move in her last, which I find intriguing whenever I see a trainer move that horse into stakes company. Also, 3-Category Seven is in the money 14-of-16 times at the distance, although I am not thrilled with the current 7-2 price in a contest. 6-Bella Diamante also showed some speed last out, moving from 8th to third, and a worked a bullet workout before last. I also like the 7-Slide on Bye on the merits of her last two….

so

Entry 1: 2-Cherry Pink
Entry 2: 6-Bella Diamante
Entry 3: 7-Slide On Bye

Now is the time boys to make a big noise.

I looked at Bella Diamante a long time...

and decided I was too unsure of the 1st time on turf so I went with Slide On Bye. She could be the wildcard if she takes to the lawn.

Just one pick for me: 7-Slide On Bye.

I Understand The One Pick Thing....

My brother plays that way as well, but I always play multiple entries, it suits my style and psyche a little better. I find myself really getting down early in tourneys if things aren’t going well and I have only one entry. When I have the maximum entries, I know that I will score well enough on one of them, usually, to have a shot at the end…..

so I’ve started going with just one.

I suppose those don't kill you in contests...

anybody with the winner doesn’t get much and the place, while okay at $4.00, isn’t much of a separator.

5-1 In A Contest...

is usually as low as I will go, in terms of odds. But when a horse looks like such a certain lock and the race is a mandatory, I have debated with myself for years over whether or not it is a better strategy to just take the money…..I can still never bring myself to do it, usually on the off-chance that a long-price will get into the two-hole and prove far more profitable.

I know what you mean....

Depending on where I’m at in a contest (early race or late race, and my standing), I generally won’t go lower than 5/1 or 4/1 on a mandatory early…but am willing to take less (7/2 or so) if A) I really like the horse, and B) can’t find anything else for the place spot that can generate some value.

Looking Ahead To Lone Star 6....

In keeping with the theme of the day in Texas, another strong shipper seems to be the class of the field, the 1-Dean’s Kitten for Maker and the Ramseys. I expect him to suck up all the money, and perhaps rightfully so, but it is something to consider that the 3-Expansion is a full 22 points better in Brisnet’s Prime Power category. I would love it if he would drift up to 6-1.

As for the prices in this field, I favor the 4-Alwayswithapproval on the strength of 5-of-6 in-the-money at the track, and 8-of-9 itm on the turf. Also, I have an interest in the 6-Unrbridled’s Heart: nice works the last two, and stepping up into stakes off an allowance that saw him improve 13 lengths from first call to wire in a win for trainer Dallas Keen. Another maybe for me is the 7-Golden Euro, despite his lack of speed numbers….sixth beaten 9 1/2 and seventh beaten 23 3/4 in his last two….Why is he here if not for a trainer seeing some reason for it?

Tough to see all these stakes races with no horses.

I realize why the horsemen don’t want fewer dates (less chances to make money) but with the horse population what it is right now it just doesn’t make any sense to run as many dates as we do. Most of these fields are just not very good betting races.

I got a little spoiled in England...

I really liked their cask ales over there (I didn’t think I would). They weren’t has heavy or as bitter as I was expecting. I don’t drink a lot of the microbrews out here in the northwest because they tend to be way too hoppy for my tastes.

At home, however, I’m a Silver Bullet guy.

Never Forget....

that most cappers I have talked to say they aim to hit only three or four races in a contest. Doesn’t matter when they happen! So long as you hit them!

My problem is that I tend to get a bit "grab baggy" in contests as the races wear on.

If I get something early, I tend to have a much better day and don’t push things as much. When I go race after race coming up short, I tend to go a bit too much after bombs that I hate.

I love 5-Knockout Artist quite a bit in this spot…along with his 8/1 ML.

Auburn Handicap?

Any thoughts?
I stuck 4 horses on my P4, with Seattle Sniper as my favorite. Two races under his belt, looked strong at 6.5 furlongs his last time out.

I’m interested to see how Mack’s Gold Bullet does coming off the layoff after posting a 66 and 71 beyer as a two year old. Vann Belvoir does alright first time back.

Couldabenthewhisky, has looked strong in his past two starts, but both were in the slop…some horses run better in the slop, some worse, and some the same. Not sure what category he falls in to.

Hayjax the speed, is coming from the outside, and this is his second race back.

HOL 9

Let’s see if we can bring a couple home at HOL. I think HOL 8 sets up nicely for 4-Camp Victory, plus he’s decent odds at 7/1.

I’d play M One Rifle if his odds were a bit better.

I'd probably be livid if I had the 1

cause he was very strong at the wire. But that was a lot of contact. If it was only one bump, they probably let it go. But the second bump, I think, is what did it.

That Was A Tough One....

but, I will bet the thinking was that that second bump sent the three out into the four, and probably compromised what would have been a winning run.

I would think the winning number here, with all the chalk, would have been low…I am thinking 80 to 90 dollars. Let’s split the difference and say 85 bucks is the target.

Yeah, 17/1 was pretty nice for Bejarano on the speed.

Place came back at $12 so $59.20 at the line for me. Not much of an ROI; I needed something in those early races to help that final total.

Yeah this was cool

Maybe plan a little bit ahead of time? I didnt have time to look into this since i had just gotten off work, but if we know of a big stakes day coming up, and I can get a few days to buy the individual race forms, and look at them that would be great.
