2011 KENTUCKY DERBY DAY: Results and Open Thread

LOUISVILLE, KY - MAY 05: View of Spires of Churchhill Downs before the 137th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 5, 2011 in Louisville, Kentucky. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

The handicapping is complete (mostly). The TwinSpires account is funded (for now). The beer is cold. The bourbon is ready. It's Kentucky Derby Day!

Churchill Downs will feature a 13-race card today, highlighted by the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby (Race 11, post time 6:24 Eastern / 3:24 Pacific, TV: Undercard on Versus and Derby on NBC). The first race will go to post at 10:30am Eastern and the final race of the day will go off at 7:50. And, yes, I might be playing races #12 and #13. You gotta get even at some point!

Good look to everyone today with your wagers, and may we have a safe Derby Day for all the horses, jockeys and track personnel.

The chart below will track all of the day's winners and pari-mutuel payouts. All post times are listed as Eastern. Clink on the link of the winner's name to be taken to the result chart via DRF.com.

Note: The chart below looks better if you are viewing on the "wide" setting (top right corner menu). I try to set up all the charts so they look fine on Narrow or Wide, but couldn't make it happen for this one.

Twice the Appeal (7-1)
Nehro (7-1)
Pants on Fire (9-1)

Mucho Macho Man (12-1)

Twinspired (21-1)
Animal Kingdom (24-1)
Watch Me Go (29-1)
Derby Kitten (29-1)
Santiva (30-1)
Brilliant Speed (30-1)
Decisive Moment (42-1)
Comma to the Top (43-1)

(By the way, I'm on zero sleep and still jet lagged at this point. forgive the horrendous typos and grammar that will probably pour from my fingers today. Add in some bourbon and it will probably get ugly!)

Here's my desired Pick 6 play...

Borel w Borel w Borel w Borel w Borel w Borel.

Sadly, Calvin isn’t riding in the Woodford so my dreams of an “All Borel” jackpot are dashed before they started.

tricky first race

All/2/8,9

kinda like the entry and the 6 but if Bind wins the second the pick 3 isn’t gonna pay much

by Lucky Duck on May 7, 2011 10:23 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I couldn't get by Bind in the 2nd.

Looks really strong in that spot.

The entry is my play in this spot, but I like the 5 just a tad.

and got scared off due to that awful dirt effort first time out.

The 4 was the only thing I could come up with other than the 2

don’t like the fact that Wordly doesn’t seem to like to win. Class relief should help a bit.

Not a great ride by Rosie in that one...IMHO

I know he was rank a bit early, but at some point you have to let him run. It was a softish pace, it’s okay to go to the front.

Yeah, it's a crap shoot

His pedigree doesn’t suggest “win at first asking” at all but Baffert does well and early money loves him. I might go a light win bet against him (like the 2 and 8 a bit).

’the 2 looks good

by Lucky Duck on May 7, 2011 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

I think the 2 might get that lead without a lot of work...

Of course it really depends on Baffert’s horse. I don’t know that the 8 is going to show as much speed on the dirt as he did on synthetics. We’ll see.

I’m going win bet on 2.

General thoughts on weather...

So if we are looking at a wet track (which I don’t think we will) how’s it affecting everyone’s thoughts for the Derby.

I like Midnight Interlude a lot, and think it only helps him. His maiden beaking race in the slop at SA was impressive looking. Hurts the deept closers right? That’s the general rule?

by RParker on May 7, 2011 12:30 PM EDT reply actions

Soldat probably moves up in the slop...

I think it would really hurt Master of Hounds.

Pants On Fire has won on the slop before, but for many of them, it’s tough to really know until they do it.

Shoot

Now express bet is slowing down….You would think these guys would be prepared for a day like this

by RParker on May 7, 2011 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

I know...

on a day where the betting is huge, how can you have slow performance.

TwinSpires has been pretty good today but last year (or two back) is completely locked up prior to the Derby.

My wife..

Would probably LOVE it if express bet locked up prior to the Derby, me not so much.

Here’s a good discussion questions. What post time price and what horse would make you re-think your derby bet. In other words, any value plays at the last minute that you are thinking about.

I’m trying to talk myself out of comma to the top at 30-1 or better, if it occurs.

by RParker on May 7, 2011 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

That's a good question...

Right now, I’m not liking Midnight Interlude at 8/1….If he were to drift up to 12/1 or so, I would get on board. Right now, I’m starting to go towards Soldat and Nehro.

You read my mind

8-1? I almost cried. I’ve spent the last two weeks really getting sold on him…but 8-1? I mean I have to include him in bets because I like him so much…But in terms of value, there’s nothing there at 8-1.

by RParker on May 7, 2011 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, 15/1 or so is much, much nicer.

I’ll have some action to him but I’m really torn right now on where my win bet will go.

MMM

What about him? Maybe he gets lost in the betting crowd…Wasn’t he at like 10-1 last check? Or am I way off?

He might be where I go if I can get double digits. I’m also going to really key in on dialed on for exotics.

by RParker on May 7, 2011 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

He's down to like 9/1 last I saw...

I like him but seems like some of these are just not as high as I would like.

Circled it last night and decided anything over 10/1 I’d make a play. Need some action between these races at CD.

Maybe not Spanish Chestnut fast…but it should be fair. We know Comma will go with P-Val and I think Pants and Soldat will follow a length off. If Decisive goes with…could be pretty fast.

I can’t believe how slow that pace was…1:12+ for six? Comma to the Top stayed much further back then I thought. Another game effort by Shackelford, thought he might take them all the way.
