KENTUCKY DERBY 2011 RESULT: Animal Kingdom runs them down late (Video Replay)
Animal Kingdom, in his first race ever on a dirt surface, passes a game Shackleford in the final furlongs to win the 2011 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Shackleford set one of the slower paces in the last several years in the Derby, going 1:13+ for six furlongs. Nehro, who ran closer to the place than usual, ran a strong final quarter mile but couldn't get to the winner at the wire.
Animal Kingdom was ridden by John Velazquez and trained by Graham Motion. Congratulations to the connections.
I'll have more on Animal Kingdom's win in the Kentucky Derby, a peek ahead at the Preakness, and a recap of all of the action at Churchill Downs, a bit later this weekend. Right now, I gotta finish off a bottle of bourbon!

Yep, good call...we've talked about that before...
think his stud value just went up?

I know it's said nearly every year
(Except for when a horse like MTB wins) — But this one does feel like he has the potential to sweep the TC. Won on all surfaces, four different tracks already, European so he’ll have the stamina in NY if he wins the Preakness.
Just throwing it out there.

He's versatile...
and he stayed close to the lead today…although they were brutally soft fractions for the Derby (who saw that coming? I blew that badly).
He’s a nice colt and, I guess, those Poly races CAN tell us something.

I doubt Master of Hounds runs at Pimlico but he has to be the favorite at Saratoga.

He ran pretty well..
and Dialed In ran well, considering the pacesetter went 1:13+…I’ll do a post on this tomorrow, but these were some of the slowest Derby fractions in a long, long time.

You were right on to question the pace, Derek
I blew that call…thought it would be much faster.

A ton of experts thought the same, sir. But I couldn’t see it and it’s why I was leery.

Good call on your part.
I still don’t know why P-Val hung back with Comma…
Oh well, two weeks and we do it again at Pimlico.

I really think Pimlico is going to have a helluva pace. The burners are going to look at this and think they can stretch everyone early. Those that run, that is.

Good call on your part.
No it wasn’t, because I still couldn’t figure it out in the end :)

Well, you questioned it...I took it for granted...always bad move on a handicapper's part.
I thought speed could play well but never anticipated 1:13 for six.
Pimlico is gonna be fun.

Nehro showed some versatility today, as well...
ran much closer and ran a good race…couldn’t get the winner, but considering the pace and his normal running style, a very solid effort.

Watching the replay – Shackleford is getting a big push, but I think he only hung in because the splits were so slow
Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.
On the turn, I thought he'd win...
you get those kind of fractions and you expect to kick on for home. As soon as I saw the six split, it was bad news for Dialed In or anyone at the back of the pack to win.
I thought NBC’s analysts (and I really like Randy Moss) did a poor job of explaining what happened on the lead today. The pace made this race..as it usually does.

Any updates or are you going to do another thing on it?

Still waiting for a good piece on it from the big sources...
only thing I’m hearing and reading is that he was taken to the stalls and has a non-life threatening fracture…

Joe Drape - NYTimes
I’ve gotta say that Joe Drape in the New York Times nailed this one calling Animal Kingdom his #1 pick in a BIG chart in that paper on Friday.
How is it that Andy Beyer can’t pick this race?
He doesn't get past his figs...
he limits himself. Honestly, it’s a tough race for anyone to pick but he never seems to get past his figures these days.

Disappointed
…that I had keyed Animal Kingdom and still managed only to make 200 bucks for the day! Hit the exacta a couple of times and the double, but missed on the trifecta and superfecta due to the absence of Nehro, which has mystified and pissed me off since the race ended, because I included him in the exacta.
I really think Shackleford is a good horse. Does anyone else think he could become a dominant miler?
Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,
For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.
Miler, absolutely.
I’d agree with that. He should have won yesterday with the pace they gave him and it was probably distance limitations that cost him. I wonder if they’ll go that route with him.

Preakness
So do you think if Shackleford had skipped the Derby and were fresh for the Preakness that 1 3/16 would be within his upper limit and could win?
Honestly, I don't know...
If he got 1:13+ on the front end? Yeah, I definitely think he’d get it. His pedigree seems fine.
He ran great to finish 4th but you’re not going to get a better set-up to win the Derby wire-to-wire than he did yesterday.

Please listen to this
I’m going to tell everybody here something extremely valuable because I don’t want to see it happen to anybody else. No I’m not dying, but I wanted to watching the finish. Somehow I managed to spend 4 days handicapping this thing, eliminating horses, being left with the 1,13,14, 15, 16,17, 19, and still not freaking hitting the race. I mean not even a show bet. And that is what I am here to preach. I know it’s only 364 days away, but I am going to make sure everybody makes good money next year and doesn’t overlook the easiest bet at the track.
If you noticed, Nehro paid 6.40 to show and MMM payed 7 dollars. Folks, that is criminal. If this was the Arkansas Derby, that would need to be investigated. MMM was by far the easiest horse in the race to be identified as the KEY horse. For every 100 dollars you played him to show, you would have made 350.00. That is what the exacta paid. I promise you that not many people had the 16,19 exacta a bunch of times.
Here are the main rules to find the best horses in the race. Not everything is always 100%, but just trust me and history on this one
1) Scratch the 1
2) A horse must run no worse than 5th place and 4.5 lengths of the leader in his last prep race. Having said that, 2nd or 3rd place is ideal. Quitting to 5th and closing to 5th are completely different
3) MUST RUN AS A 2 YEAR OLD
4) Last race he should have run the last 1/4 of a mile in 25.2 seconds or less
5) Don’t worry too much about synthetic horses. A good horse is a good horse
6) Don’t worry too much about jockey or 1st time jockey
7) Forget dosage, it just doesn’t matter anymore
8) Fastest time and Beyer figure should be at 1 1/8
9) Must, must, must train well at CD before race. Bullet works important. Animal Kindom ran a 6F of 1:13 which wasn’t quite a bullet that day but would have been the day before.
10) Narrow it down to 1-2 horses fitting these rules and maybe with good breeding as well, such as Raise a Native and Buckpasser in Sire line. Race is a lot easier to watch trying to track 1-2 horses as opposed to trying to find all 4 of your horses for the superfecta. Trust me, it’s not gonna happen.
That was a crazy slow pace, and once AK started his run, I was surprised. Crazy race (as usual).
Eagles next starting QB: "East-West Shrine Game Legend" Mike Kafka
Flyers: Bob
Phillies:Gah enough with the injuries!.
It's always a challenge, isn't it?
A great training job by Motion on Animal Kingdom. He had him ready to run a big one.
The Preakness should be interesting, especially if Flashpoint decides to take a shot.

Some their photos were ok snd some were not...
Probably a bunch went into the open before they realized the mistake. Obviously, the caption writer went off an not-to-date entry list.
