Yeah, there's been more of those...
Since 2000 (if my quick research is correct)
Curlin won the Classic (and was 4th the next year)
Summer Bird finished 4th.
Bernardini finished 2nd.
Birdstone finished 7th.
I’ll have to dig more into that.

It sucked that Street Sense
BC Classic race was on the slop though. I think it would’ve been another battle between he and Curlin on a good track. It’s irrelevant I know, just could’ve faired better I’m sure.
Don't You Think
that the lack of BC Classic winners coming from the three-year old ranks really speaks to just how much maturation happens for horses between the third and fourth year? , I think it also shines a light on what a shame it is that so many elite three-year olds don’t come back for a four-year old campaign.
Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,
For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.
I think it's two things...
the first being exactly what you wrote – some of these winners either a) don’t develop much after their Derby win or B) weren’t that good to begin with. I think the other side of it is the typical injuries/bad luck. Barbaro, Smarty Jones, and Afleet Alex never ran a post-Triple Crown race. Big Brown fought foot problems almost his whole 3yyo year.
We’ve had a stretch of really bad luck lately with 3yos and I’m not sure what the cause of the problem is (if there is a specific cause…there might not be one).
