Santa Anita to host 2012 Breeders' Cup
This had been rumored for a several weeks but becomes "official" today.
I'm a bit surprised that the BC is going back to Santa Anita so quickly since they are still struggling with the main track. Last year Santa Anita returned to a dirt surface but the track was incredibly hard and fast and the surface is being completely replaced for their upcoming fall meet. This is after several years of problems with multiple synthetic surfaces.
Belmont, which hasn't hosted since 2005, has been left on the sidelines again.

Hmm
Strange choice indeed. Though I’ve heard multiple times that BC won’t go back to synthetic due to the general issues they experienced at SA a few years ago.
I was really hoping that they were going to make Churchill the home for at least a few more years. The problem is that the track doesn’t make much money when they host the BC meet. BC takes the lions share and basically just pays operating expenses to the track. Now the prestige is huge, so they’ll never lack suitors. But one would assume SA/CD/Monmouth would make a boatload of money.

Yeah, I don't think they would have gone back if it was still synthetic...
I’m just a bit surprised they are returning to SA before going to New York (or Monmouth…which I thought was a nice venue with unfortunately awful weather that weekend) and before seeing how the (2nd) new dirt surface will play this fall/winter.

The weather is definitely a plus...
probably the biggest plus for SA over the others.
Since the Breeders’ Cup can’t go to Gulfstream anymore (due to the renovations) and they probably don’t want to go to Hollywood due to the synthetic, SA is really the best “warm weather” option available.
I would have liked to have seen New York get their turn in the rotation but it will definitely be easier for me to get to SoCal.
