TRAVERS STAKES 2011 RESULT: Stay Thirsty Takes His Place At The Top (w/Video)

Stay Thirsty

Stay Thirsty tracked early pacesetter Shackleford through the opening six furlongs and the pulled away at the top of the stretch to win the 142nd running of the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga.  Rattlesnake Bridge finished 2nd, J W Blue 3rd, and Ruler On Ice 4th.  Coil and Shackleford were well beaten.

With his win in the Travers, Stay Thirsty stamps himself as the leading contender for the title of champion three-year-old colt of 2011. That competition now turns to the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Breeders' Cup Classic, races where the Travers winner and his three-year-old rivals will face the contingent of older males. Solid performances by Stay Thirsty in those two races could set him up to be named champion three-year-old AND Horse of the Year (depending on what happens with Havre de Grace and Blind Luck).

The other three-year-old contenders didn't help themselves too much today as Shackleford spit the bit at the top of the lane, Coil was a no-show, and Ruler On Ice could only round out the superfecta.

Stay Thirsty....

is a very good horse, and a late bloomer, but will he be mature enough to best older males? I just don’t think so. I see him as an easy toss for the win hole in either of the next two races you mention. What do you think?

Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,
For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.

I don't know...

I just don’t know what to make of these males this year – both older and 3yos. Most have distance concerns and the consistency just hasn’t been where I’d like to see it in late August.

I’m with you on a little skepticism with Stay Thirsty as that last 1/4 mile of the Travers was a crawl. Of course, Saratoga has a way of making a lot of horses crawl home. Still, I’d like to see Stay Thirsty run that kind of race one more time to be truly convinced heading into the Breeders’ Cup.
