WOODWARD STAKES 2011: Havre de Grace To Challenge Seven Rivals
Havre de Grace drew post position six and was installed as the 8/5 morning line favorite for Saturday's $750,000 Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga (post time: 5:45pm Eastern). The filly will face a tough field of seven rivals in a major test on her road to the Breeders' Cup Classic in November. Among Havre de Grace's challengers are Flat Out (2nd in the Whitney to Tizway), Ice Box (2010 Florida Derby winner), and Rule (3rd in the 2011 Donn and Salvatore Mile).
In other races on the Woodward day card:
- Sidney's Candy will try dirt again (even though he's shown time and again how good of a turf horse he is), and will start in the Grade 1 Forego at seven furlongs. He'll face eight other horses, including Aikenite, Jackson Bend, Jersey Town, and Regal Ransom.
- The rescheduled Grade 1 Personal Ensign will run on Saturday in race eight.

Good spot for Havre de Grace
I think she should win.
Really not sure why Sidney’s Candy is being run on dirt.
I don't either...
I think it’s pretty clear he’s a turf horse at this point, or at least a lot better on turf. I’m not sure how much more proof they need. And even if he runs well on dirt in the Forego, where would you put him in the Breeders’ Cup on dirt? The Classic? I can’t see him going 10f. The Sprint? Seems too short for him? The Dirt Mile? If you’re going to run him at a mile, might as well run him on grass.
Just my take, but I think the connections want him to run in the Classic and are trying to convince themselves that he can run as good on dirt as turf.
