2012 Holy Bull Result: Algorithms Runs By Hansen

Algorithms, sent off as the second choice at odds of 5/2, rolled by Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Hansen at the top of the stretch on his way to an easy win in the Grade 3 Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park. The Juvenile winner stumbled and broke in as he was leaving the gate and then flashed his trademark early speed to bound away from the field by almost four lengths on the backstretch. Algorithms, a winner at Gulfstream in his last race over allowance company, relaxed well early and chased down the tiring favorite after making a big move on the turn.

Hansen was keyed up early as he scorched early fractions of 23.64 and 22.03 in the first half mile in his first start over an off track. The name of his game is early speed, so you really can't fault the strategy. At the same time, he'll need to learn to reign in his aggression just a little bit if he is going to challenge his peers at longer distances. The Holy Bull wasn't a bad race for Hansen; he was able to hold second after setting a hot pace. But he'll need to improve off of this effort going forward.

My Adonis rallied to finish third, rounding out the trifecta.

Algorithms is a three-year-old son of Bernardini out of a Cryptoclearance mare (Ava Knowsthecode), trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Javier Castellano. He is now a perfect three-for-three following prior wins at Belmont and Gulfstream Park.

Before the Race

Maker was being interviewed and I didn’t get the sense he felt too good about the surface, but at the same time it didn’t really appear that Hansen hated the mud either. I kind of agree with Gary Stevens, I’d like to see the next race for Hansen, hopefully on a good track, although that’s never a guarrentee this time of y ear or at the Derby.

Looks like I had a comment disappoear...oh well

Anyway, here’s what I wrote the first time:

Definitely agree on Maker, he seemed a little iffy before the race on how he thought Hansen would perform.

I thought, overall, Hansen did pretty well when you consider the start and the absurd fractions he put up. Most horses that go 45 and change in the opening half of a one-mile race aren’t going to be anywhere to be seen at the finish. I thought it was as good thing that he held second.

I’m not sure how far Hansen really wants to go or whether he’ll be a legit Derby contender come May, but I think if Maker spots him well in the future (and I have no reason to believe that he won’t), he should have a nice career ahead of him.

They need to fix Hansen

He definitely needs to be slower in the first fractions. Nothing wrong with being a sprinter that is balls to the wall from the gate to the wire, but he can’t get away with that indefinitely.

I almost wonder if they might try taking the shades off at some point.

Perhaps that will take a little of the edge off in the early stages.

And I'll give him this...

Hansen runs his heart out each race. He kept on going after being headed in the Holy Bull when a lot of frontrunners just flat out quit. I just love that about him.

Hansen...

I’m anxious to see his next race. The stumble just took the starch out of it. He still ran hard, but who knows how the start effected him physically. derbydeals.com
