A thrilling finish in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile with Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner, Groupie Doll, coming up a head-bob short to Stay Thirsty at the wire.
Stay Thirsty used a long, grinding run down the stretch to nail Groupie Doll at the wire to win the Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct. Groupie Doll seemed to have the edge inside the final furlong but couldn't win the head bob with Stay Thirsty in a heart-breaking defeat.
Groupie Doll, sent to post as the even money favorite, stalked the early speed of Buffum and Coil, while Stay Thirsty hung back in fourth position down the backstretch. As the field rounded the far turn, Groupie Doll took dead aim on the leaders, putting away those two rivals inside the quarter pole. But just when it seemed the filly would take command of the race, Stay Thirsty came with a final run to the front despite drifting at the midway point of the stretch. Groupie Doll held off the winner the entire length of the stretch, only surrendering the lead on the final head-bob.
Morning scratches of 2-Associate and 4-Jersey Town reduced the field to five at post time. Jersey Town was scratched due to an elevated temperature and subsequently retired from racing. He won the 2010 Cigar Mile.
