2012 Donn Handicap Result: Hymn Book Runs By Mission Impazible

Hymn Book used a late rally down the center of the Gulfstream Park track to edge by Mission Impazible to win the Grade 1 Donn Handicap on Saturday afternoon. Overnight and early morning rain soaked the Gulfstream main track, leaving the surface rated as "GOOD" by the post time for the Donn. Hymn Book, a horse that came into the Donn with a 4-3-0-1 lifetime record on "off" tracks, sat mid-pack while Trickmeister and Shackleford carved out solid fractions in the early stages. At the top of the stretch, Mission Impazible slipped through on the rail and appeared to be in position to take command of the race but he lost momentum inside the final furlong when he shifted out. Redeemed and Hymn Book commenced late runs down the middle of the track, with Hymn Book sustaining his run to the wire.

Hymn Book is a six-year-old gelding sired by Arch out of a Known Fact mare (Vespers) trained by Shug McGaughey and ridden by John Velazquez. This is his first win in a graded stakes race. In his last race he finished 2nd behind To Honor And Serve in the G1-Cigar Mile at Aqueduct.

Jeez.

When are they going to realize that Shack is a miler. I think everyone but his connections see that. He needs a perfect trip to go any longer. And 23s are not perfect.

No kidding.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

He cruised along quite nicely until he hit that proverbial wall that he seems to hit every race right around a mile.

If worms had machine guns, birds wouldn't mess with them

I had the 1,2,10 boxed on one ticket and the 1,4,10 on another. I was too cheap to box the four horses on one ticket and not confident enough to play the wheel. I’m close, but need to learn how to play better.

Every day playing the races is an education.

We’ve all been there, and are still there.

I like part wheels better than boxes, for the most part. Depends on the race but, generally, the return is better even if the coverage is a little less.

swing for the fences

I’ve appreciated your input on the topic since I started following your blog, Matt. I picked up the book you suggested and, of course, am doing the OPPOSITE of what it says. I think I’ll lay off the trifectas for a while and see if I can build up a little bank roll for the big races coming up.

I have a love/hate thing with exotic bets.

I love to bet tris and Pick 3s/4s, but sometimes I get into habits where I’m not looking for the best horse but just trying to find 3 or 4 horses to toss into an exotic bet, which usually gets me into trouble. Sometimes I just need to scale back to Win betting, or even Win-Place-Show, in order to better manage the bankroll at times.

Baby step

Matt, thanks for the link to the video. In the handicapping book, it talks about envisioning the pace of the race, and I’m excited that I actually was able to do that for the Donn, right down to Shack dropping out and the mudders taking over. I think I’m catching on. When is the next good race? Eighty eight days until the Derby. Whoa hoa!

Some good stakes races each of the next couple of weekends

but the weekend of March 3rd has a lot of nice Grade 1s on the schedule at Santa Anita.
