2012 Southwest Stakes: Entries and Post Positions
Twenty-one horses entered the 2012 Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park, causing track officials to split the race into two divisions. Each race will both carry the same graded status, as well as a $250,000 purse. The divisions will run as Race 8 and Race 9 (Post times: 4:41 and 5:15 Central; TV; TVG, HRTV) on Monday's Oaklawn Park card.
Junebugred, winner of the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn on January 16th is one of 11 entries in the first division of the Southwest. He'll be joined by the runner-up in the Smarty Jones, Reckless Jerry, along with an intriguing entry from trainer Steven Asmussen, Unbridled's Note.
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint winner Secret Circle leads the field in the 2nd division of the Southwest. He finished 2nd in the G3-Sham Stakes at Santa Anita back on January 7th in his first attempt at two turns.
Oaklawn Park is offering a special Southwest Stakes Daily Double beginning with the running of the first division.
Below are the entries and post positions for the Southwest Stakes. I'll have a preview of each division on Sunday afternoon.

twice the fun
Hi Matt. I’m looking forward to your coverage of these races. Two questions, please: 1) Will the track layout mean closers are at a distinct disadvantage? and 2) Should the weight differences be a major factor? Junebugred will carry more than 7 pounds than others. Thanks in advance.

I think that, yes, unless the pace is insane, closets are at a disadvantage. Speed should play well; of course, you never know with three year olds.
Weight is a little tougher to factor. I’m not sold on Junebugred already, so the weight difference isn’t really a factor for me. Personally, I don’t really factor in weight unless 1) the difference is something like 10 lbs or more, or 2) a horse had demonstrated that he or she struggles once they hit a certain weight.

that should be 'closers', not 'closets'

Hope my pick comes out of the closet
I was surprised Mike Watchmaker poo poo’ed this card, saying only Junebugred and Secret Circle have serious Derby potential. Seems like this race, and Oaklawn, have sent some good runners to the KD in recent years. I’m interested in hearing what others think of the field. Also hoping all the focus will be on a those few horses and there will be good value in a few of the locals.
