Goldencents stalked the early fractions of Super Ninety Nine, moved to the lead at the top of the stretch, repelled a three-wide move by favorite Flashback, and pulled away to win the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby to earn a ticket to the 2013 Kentucky Derby for co-owner Rick Pitino. Flashback held on to finish third while Super Ninety Nine faded to finish third. Tiz a Minister rallied from almost twenty lengths back to round out the superfecta.
Flashback, making a big move coming off the far turn, looked like a certain winner at the top of the stretch but Goldencents had a lot more run left in him. Jockey Kevin Krigger, riding his first Grade 1 winner, saved plenty of energy for the final furlong on his way to victory.
Goldencents is a three-year-old colt by Into Mischief out of a Banker's Gold mare (Golden Works), trained by Doug O'Neill and ridden by Kevin Krigger.
Earlier on the Santa Anita card:
- 1/5 post time favorite Beholder went gate-to-wire to win the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks.
- Jimmy Creed stalked early pacesetter Comma to the Top on his way to a victory in the Grade 2 Potrero Stakes.
