After year one, it seems clear what the goals of the point system are:
1. Reward 3 year old success
2. Keep sprinters out
3. Keep fillies out.
4. Destroy Hawthorne
5. Promote Derby Trial
Goals 1 and 2 are fine. 3-5 are dumb. You really don't need a points system to do all this. Regardless, the cutoff is going to be 20 points or lower, which makes it all the more ridiculous. With 20 spots, any horse that could possibly have a hope in the Derby can make it (Except Dreaming of Julia). Was there ever a horse that didn't make the derby that should have made it? In the previous system, I doubt it.
In this system, it's much more possible. A horse who dominates their 2 year old campaign, maybe even wins the BC Juvenile, and maybe even wins a race at 3, but gets hurt, bad weather, etc... can get shutout, when a horse who finishes 3rd in the Spiral then 4th in the Blue Grass gets in.
There's all this talk about how great the system was, but really, at the end of the day, it kept the Illinois Derby winner out and Dreaming of Julia. Yay...
