She's A Tiger went straight to the lead under Gary Stevens and then held off a late charge from Ria Antonia and Rosalind in the shadow of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita but there would be no victory for the filly. An inquiry followed the race as She's A Tiger and Ria Antonia bumped in the final strides of the race, causing Ria Antonia to go wide. She's A Tiger was disqualified and placed second, while Ria Antionia was declared the winner.
The race was marred by a spill in the far turn as Secret Compass and jockey John Velazquez went down. Velazquez was moving while on the ground and appeared, at first look, to escape serious injury. Secret Compass sustained a fracture to one of her front legs and was euthanized, a sad end to a much too short racing career.
BC Vet Dr. Wayne McIlwaith released this statement following the race:
"Secret Compass sustained a lateral condylar fracture with dislocation, which is an injury we can't bring them back from because when they dislocate on the track, they lose their blood supply, so she has been euthanized."
Condolences to the connections of the filly.
Ria Antonia is a two-year-old filly by Rockport Harbor out of a Mr. Greeley mare (Baroness), trained by Lynn Schiff and ridden by Javier Castellano.
