JC Gold Cup: Ron the Greek shocks at 22/1

Ron the Greek made a big move along the rail inside the final quarter mile to storm away to victory in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at odds of 21/1. Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice finished second while two-time JC Gold Cup winner Flat Out finished third. Kentucky Derby winner Orb didn't run a step in the race and finished last of the field of eight. Cross Traffic, an expected pace setter and winner of the Whitney last time out, stumbled from the gate and never raced anywhere near the pack.

Time will tell what this Gold Cup teaches us for the Breeders' Cup Classic, but I think we can make at least a few observations:

1. Ron the Greek can fire a big race once and a while, and he just fired a huge one at Belmont.

2. Palace Malice rebounded nicely from his disaster in the Travers and was a good second but will need to improve to be a BC Classic winner.

3. Orb looked great in the Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby. Orb has not looked anywhere near as good since. I wouldn't bet a dime on him at the Breeders' Cup but I doubt that will be an issue after this flop.

4. Flat Out is such a great "old pro"; race after race, year after year, he just does what he does - cash checks.

Below are the payouts for the Jockey Club Gold Cup:

Hirsch Turf: Little Mike returns to form

Breeders' Cup Turf winner Little Mike fought off a late charge from Big Blue Kitten along the rail to win the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont Park. The Hirsch began with a flurry as Joes Blazing Aaron blazed through rapid fractions of 23.92, 47.70 and 1:11.57 over the first half of the mile and a half journey. Little Mike, content to sit off the pace much like he did at the Breeders' Cup last fall, made a strong move to the lead coming off the far turn and then held off all comers through a grueling stretch drive.

The victory for Little Mike reverses a really bad stretch of form that saw him lose four straight races after his Breeders' Cup triumph. He was a non-factor in Dubai for two events and then ran so-so in both the G1-United Nations and the G1-Arlington Million. That poor stretch certainly caused me to doubt the ability of Little Mike to return to his Grade 1 form but with his win in the Hirsch, Little Mike is clearly not done winning big races.

Little Mike is a six-year-old gelding by Spanish Steps out of a Wavering Monarch mare (Hay Jude), trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Mike Smith.

The Joe Hirsch Turf Classic is a "Win and You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup Turf.

Flower Bowl: Laughing all the way

The drama in the Flower Bowl was relatively short-lived as Laughing (IRE), part of a coupled entry with stablemate Tannery (IRE) that went to post at odds of 3/5, went straight to the lead at the start of the race, slowed the pace down to something a $5,000 claimer would love while lulling her rivals to sleep, and then rolled home to win the Grade 1 Flower Bowl at Belmont Park. Tannery made a spirited run in deep stretch to finish second, keying a lovely 1-2 finish from the heavily bet entry. Mystical Star finished third.

We need no further illustration of the "slow early-fast late" nature of the Flower Bowl pace than the splits from the first and the last half mile:

1st 4 furlongs: 51.76
Last 4 furlongs: 46.40

Laughing is a five-year-old mare by Dansili (GB) out of a Be My Chief mare (Comic (IRE)), trained by Alan Goldberg and ridden by Jose Lezcano. With her vicotyr in the Flower Bowl, Laughing has won four straight graded stakes races.

The Flower Bowl is a "Win and You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Below are the payouts from the Flower Bowl.

Vosburgh: Private Zone holds off Justin Phillip

Private Zone held off Justin Phillip through a thrilling stretch duel to win the Grade 1 Vosburgh at Belmont Park on Super Saturday. Breaking very fast from the gate, Private Zone went right to the front of the pack and set quick fractions through the first half mile of the six panel affair. After dispatching of his early rivals, Private Zone had to deal with a hard-charging Justin Phillip to his outside as the field entered the top of the stretch. Justin Phillip looked to have all the momentum but could not get by Private Zone as the winner fought back gallantly along the rail to win by a head under the wire.

Strapping Groom finished third while Todd Pletcher's Forty Tales rounded out the superfecta.

Private Zone is a four-year-old gelding by Macho Uno out of a Siphon (BRZ) mare (Auburn Beauty), trained by Doug O'Neill and ridden by Martin Pedroza.

The Vosburgh is a "Win and You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Kelso: Graydar rolls gate to wire

Graydar broke alertly from the gate and went straight to the lead tracked by Souper Speedy through good fractions, repelled a bid from Brujo de Olleros (BRZ) in deep stretch en route to winning the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park. Brujo de Olleros finished second while Hymn Book rounded out the trifecta.

Graydar is a four-year-old colt by Unbridled's Song out of a Dehere mare (Sweetest Smile), trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Edgar Prado. Graydar has never had an issue winning races - he's now five for six in his career - but he's struggled to stay fit and healthy. He probably wasn't at his best in the Kelso but even a less than 100% Graydar was too much for his rivals to handle.

The Kelso is a "Win and You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

Below are the payouts for the Kelso:

Horse Win Place Show

Beldame: Princess of Sylmar upsets Royal Delta

Royal Delta, the two-time defending Breeders' Cup Distaff champion, couldn't hold off Kentucky Oaks winner Princess of Sylmar in the final strides as the top three-year-old filly in the country rolled to a two-length victory in the Beldame.

Long shot Roman Invader broke alertly from the gate and grabbed the early lead from the rail while Royal Delta, away just a bit slow, moved to the front in a stalking position. Princess of Sylmar stayed close to the heavy favorite down the backstretch through solid splits of 23.78 and 46.71. Rounding the far turn, Princess of Sylmar moved to challenge Royal Delta and engaged in a stretch duel that ultimately saw the filly put away her rival and pull away from the champion inside the final furlong.

Princess of Sylmar is a three-year-old filly by Majestic Warrior out of a Catienus mare (Storm Dixie), trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Javier Castellano.

The Beldame is a "Win and You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup Distaff (formerly the Ladies' Classic which was formerly the Distaff).

Below are the payouts for the Beldame:
