Japan Cup 2012: Entries, Post Positions & Odds

Solemia vs. Orfevre - Round 2 - Alan Crowhurst

A rematch of the top two finishers from this year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is on tap for the 2012 Japan Cup.

Arc winner Solemia (IRE) will take on Arc runner-up and Japanese Triple Crown winner Orfevre (JPN) in tonight's (tomorrow's) 2012 Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse. The Japan Cup is an approximately 1 1/2 mile (2,400 meters) race on the lawn run in an "American-style" counter-clockwise manner. You can check out a diagram of the course and other information related to the Japan Cup at the Horse Racing in Japan website.

This year's Japan Cup features a full field of 18 contenders. In addition to the big names from the Arc, the field includes 13-Rulership (JPN), a runner-up to Orfevre in the G1-Takarazuka Kinaen at Hansin on June 24th; 15-Gentildonna (JPN), winner of four straight races including the G1-Shuka Sho, G1-Japanese Oaks and G1-Japanese 1000 Guineas; 8-Eishin Flash (JPN), winner of the G1-Tenno Sho Autumn Stakes in his last start; and 4-Fenomeno (JPN), winner of the G2-St. Lite Kinnen and second in both the G1-Tenno Sho Autumn Stakes and the G1-Japanese Derby.

Due to the weight for age/sex allowances, Gentildonna will carry only 117 pounds and Solemia and Fenomeno will carry 121. The rest of the field will carry 126.

Post time for the 2012 Japan Cup is scheduled for 3:40pm Japan Time on Sunday in Tokyo, which corresponds to 1:40am Eastern (Sunday) and 10:40pm Pacific. (So, it's on late tonight.) The race will be televised live by TVG, which also provides free Equibase PPs for the later portion of the card.

Below are the entries, post positions and current odds (as of earlier today from the JRA pari-mutuel pools; the North American odds will differ tonight) for the 2012 Japan Cup.
