Intense Holiday made a strong late move to run down long time leader Albano to win the Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds by a head a the wire. Post time favorite and Lecomte winner Vicar's in Trouble attempted to overcome his wide post with a big, late move to get into contention but faded in deep stretch and had to settle for third. Hoppertunity rallied to grab the final spot in the superfecta, which paid a nice $137,77 for a $0.10 base bet.
The expected pace setter, Delta Jackpot winner Rise Up, broke poorly from the gate which allowed Albano (second in the Lecomte) to take control of the pace heading into the first turn. Rise Up was able to gain a good stride and stalked the leader down the backstretch through a solid half mile of 48.14. By the time Albano reached the top of the stretch, Rise Up was finished and Vicar's in Trouble began to make what looked like a late winning move. But as quickly as he thrust himself into the race, Vicar's in Trouble began to fade and it was another late runner, Intense Holiday, that was able to run down Albano for the victory.
Intense Holiday is a three-year-old colt by Harlan's Holiday out of a Unbridled's Song mare (Intensity), trained by Todd Pletcher, and ridden by Mike Smith. In his prior four races, all against graded stakes company, Intense Holiday finished 3rd, 4th, 4th and 5th, respectively.
With his victory in the Risen Star, Intense Holiday picks up 50 points towards a spot in the starting gate in the 2014 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
