Game On Dude, the morning line favorite at odds of 4/5 and bet down to 1/5 by post time, went straight to the lead, set easy fractions all alone on the lead en route to a one length victory in the final Hollywood Gold Cup to run at Hollywood Park. Jockey Mike Smith allowed the favorite to settle in nicely in the early stages and was essentially just along for the ride.
This was Game On Dude's second straight victory in the Hollywood Gold Cup; the $300,000 in winner's earnings pushed him over $5 million for his career.
Kettle Corn made a big move along the rail on the far turn and attempted to challenge Game On Dude in deep stretch but had to settle for a very good second. Clubhouse Ride, second choice on the tote board, never threatened the winner and faded to fourth at the wire.
The 2013 version of the Hollywood Gold Cup is the final to run at venerable Hollywood Park. Slated for destruction after the current meeting ends, Hollywood Park will be but a memory in the future. And while Santa Anita or Del Mar may run a race with the same name in the coming years, it won't be the same.
The history of the Hollywood Gold Cup is littered with the names of some of the greatest race horses in North American thoroughbred history. Seabiscuit won the inaugural running in 1938. Triple Crown winner Citation won in 1951. Swaps in 1956. Native Diver won three straight from 1965 to 1967, a feat unmatched until Lava Man pulled off the trifecta from 2005 to 2007. Ack Ack, Affirmed, Cigar - there is no shortage of historical names on the roll of Hollywood Gold Cup winners. And the human side is no less impressive: Charles Whittingham won the Gold Cup eight times while Laffit Pincay rode nine winners during his illustrious career.
