I don't say "wow" very often when I'm watching horse racing, even when a horse wins by an incredible amount of lengths. That wasn't the case this afternoon.
Rachel Alexandra absolutely destroyed the field in today's 135th running of the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. Watching that race it seems highly unlikely that there is any three year-old horse in the country, either colts or fillies, that could have run with her this afternoon. Officially, she won by 20 1/4 lengths. 20 and 1/4!
We've seen some awfully good winners of the Oaks the past few years, including Rags to Riches, a filly that went on to beat Curlin and other colts in the Belmont Stakes that year. This filly might be better than her.
Now, I realize I'm getting a little ahead of myself here, but is anybody else salivating at a possible Zenyatta/Rachel Alexandra match-up later on this year? Perhaps in the Breeders' Cup Distaff? We can only hope.
