Comma to the Top wins the G1 CashCall Futurity

New, 4 comments

Post-time favorite Comma to the Top stalked the pace behind early leader High Level Jeff, blew by him on the far turn, kicked well clear of the field, and easily held off the late-charging J P's Gusto to win the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park.

Comma to the Top and High Level Jeff both broke well and proceeded to gain good position heading into the first turn while J P's Gusto moved up along the rail to grab the third spot early on.  Industry Leader went well wide into the turn and never threatened the leaders after that point. Content to sit second for the majority of the race, Comma to the Top easily moved to the lead on the turn when asked by jockey Corey Nakatani.  Rustler Hustler began to make a three-wide move towards the front coming off the turn, but by the time he got to the top of the stretch, Comma to the Top had run away and hid.

A lot of credit should be given to 2nd place finisher J P's Gusto, who finished up well after switching from the rail to the middle of the track in deep stretch.  He never seriously threatened the winner but he ran a solid race and appears to have taken a step forward with his performance today.

I've got a bunch more I'm going to write about this race, specifically with the almost ridiculous delay to the start of the race due to a shoe problem with Comma to the Top.
