This was a very strange race. But the bottom line is that you'll never see a race shape up better for a Calvin Borel ridden horse to win than this. That being said, Calvin put himself in the perfect position to win by giving himself the best trip. At one point, he can't be more than 6 inches off the rail when he's about a furlong from the line. For all of his faults, Borel is the only jock who could put this ride together given the circumstances.
The video is here. Notice how Borel puts his mount on the rail on the back stretch and really waits for the race to develop. Very interesting.
Definitely proves that the trip you get is the determining factor in a win (usually, anyways).
