Today's post position draw for the 2011 Kentucky Derby is scheduled to begin around 5:00 Eastern time and will be televised live on Versus. If you can't watch the draw live, I'll have post-by-post calls in the comments and will update the chart below at the conclusion of the program.
A couple of thoughts prior to the draw:
- The #1 hole is not a death-knell if it were to fall to a horse like Dialed In or Nehro. As long as it is a horse that doesn't need to get the front quickly after leaving the gate, the rail is manageable. That being said, I don't think anyone wants to really end up there.
- The auxiliary gate (posts 16-20) is another spot where you can win from but it also does not spell instant defeat, depending on the running style. The real key is the horses around each specific horse and their running styles - that has more of an impact than simply the post number.
- Twenty-two horses have been entered in the Derby, with Sway Away and Ruler On Ice (Who? Seriously...who? I had to look him up. He was 3rd in the Sunland Derby.) needing defections in order to draw into the field. They didn't get it and will be excluded from Saturday's race.
- As was reported earlier, Uncle Mo has entered the race but is not 100% certain to run on Saturday.
