Fame And Glory (GB) made it seven in a row for Ireland in the Ascot Gold Cup by dominating his fourteen rivals in the 2 1/2 mile Group 1 race at Royal Ascot this morning. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Fame And Glory is a five-year-old son of Montjeu (IRE) out of a Shirley Heights (GB) mare (Gryada (GB)).
After a good beginning, Fame And Glory settled into fifth position during the early going and was content to see out the majority of the 2 1/2 mile trip covered up along the rail. The pace began to pick up and the field became more strung out as they field Swinley Bottom for the final mile of the race. Fame And Glory remained patient, now racing in mid-pack, until he was moved to the outside asked for more run outside of the two furlong mark. At that point, the favorite powered to the front and was never seriously threatened by runner up Opinion Poll (IRE).
Fame And Glory went to post at odds of approximately 2/1.
Due to significant rainfall in the area Wednesday night and Tuesday morning, all of today's races at Ascot, were run over ground rated "Good to Soft".
American trainer Wesley Ward will have another one of his prized juveniles competing on Friday, this time in the Group 3 Albany Stakes, Judy The Beauty (a winner at Keenland and Chantilly). His expectations are likely to be significantly diminished due to the ground conditions. Additionally, Todd Pletcher's More Than Real, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filly Turf, will try Group 1 company when she runs in the Coronation Stakes, the third race on the card. More Than Real is offered between 8/1 and 12/1 by U.K. bookmakers.
