We're about half-way through this holiday weekend stakes action with the Grade 1 Cigar Mile, G1-Gazelle, G1-Matriarch and G1-Hollywood Derby still on tap.
- The Gazelle didn't look particularly strong on paper and didn't really impress me as I was watching it. Dance Card was game to put away the field but running the final furlong in a pedestrian 13+ doesn't exactly "wow" you.
- What a tough beat for Groupie Doll in the Cigar Mile. She had to run up near the lead, a running style she typically doesn't employ, and then lost on a head-bob to the grinding Stay Thirsty. 'Tough beat' is probably an understatement.
