Book Review closed well from the back of the pack to run by Reneesgotzip and the faltering 2/5 favorite, My Miss Aurelia, to win the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes on opening day of the 2012/2013 Santa Anita meet. The favorite broke alertly and raced in a three-deep duel down the backstretch, clicking off fractions of 22.42 and 44.16 for the opening half mile, and 1:08.89 for six furlongs. These were not the kind of fractions that My Miss Aurelia needed if she was going to win a race like this. At the top of the lane the odds on favorite was leg weary and never could get by the horse to her inside, 3-Reneesgotzip. Inside the final furlong, Book Review and Rafael Bejarano launched a late run down the middle of the track to nip the Reneesgotzip at the wire.
My Miss Aurelia went to post as the 2/5 favorite, along with almost 75% of the money in the show pool. Book Review and Reneesgotzip were 2nd and 3rd favorites at odds of 9/2 and 7/1, respectively.
The ride by Corey Nakatani on My Miss Aurelia was perplexing, to say the least. With plenty of early speed in the race, there was absolutely no reason to stick her up on the lead (unless she was rank, which didn't appear to be the case). Racing three-deep through quick splits (and after a tough race at the Breeders' Cup a little under two months ago) was just too much for her to overcome on this day.
