Union Rags, runner up to Hansen in last November's Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and Algorithms, a dominant winner of the G3-Holy Bull in late January, will square off at Gulfstream Park on Sunday in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth. (Post time: 5:13pm Eastern; TV: HRTV) Union Rags began his career with three straight wins, the last two coming in the G2-Saratoga Special and the G1-Champagne, before losing by a head at the Breeders' Cup.
Algorithms is a perfect three-for-three in his career and beat Hansen by five lengths in the Holy Bull. This will be his first race around two turns but given his pedigree (by Bernardini out of a Cryptoclearance mare) the Fountain of Youth should be well within his comfort zone. Algorithms is a half-brother to Keyed Entry, Successful Mission and Justin Phillip, and his siblings have displayed a good mix of speed, stamina and grass ability.
Adding some intrigue to the race is Todd Pletcher's Discreet Dancer, an easy winner of his first two races at Gulfstream. Like Algorithms, Discreet Dancer will be trying two-turns for the first time. A son of Discreet Cat out of a Gone West mare, it remains to be seen how far this colt wants to run. Offspring of Discreet Cat have an average winning distance of 5.9 furlongs, according to Brisnet's Sire Stats.
