Algorithms Knocked Off The Kentucky Derby Trail

Well, that didn't last long, did it? About a month after an impressive win in the Holy Bull Stakes over Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Hansen, Algorithms has suffered an injury that will prevent him from running in the 2012 Kentucky Derby. According to a report in the Daily Racing Form, the popped split that kept Algorithms out of Sunday's Fountain of Youth is actually a fractured splint that will require surgery. The connections hope that the three-year-old son of Bernardini can get back to racing by summer or early fall.

Sunday's Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park was supposed to be a match-up of two Derby contending heavyweights in the form of Union Rags and Algorithms. The injury to the Todd Pletcher trainee provided a much softer comeback race for Union Rags, a situation he took full advantage of in his easy victory.

Algorithms was a perfect three for three in his young career prior to the the injury and was considered one of the top contenders for this year's Derby.
