Union Rags, runner-up in the 2011 Breeders' Cup Juvenile and the winner of the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth, will face off against Risen Star winner El Padrino in Saturday's $1 million Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park (Post time: 5:40pm Eastern; TV: NBC SportsNetwork). Overall, nine colts are entered in the Florida Derby, including: Fountain of Youth runner-up News Pending, Sam F. Davis show horse, Reveron, and the maiden Z Camelot from the barn of Dale Romans.
The Florida Derby is run at nine furlongs on the main track. The $1 million purse guarantees the winner enough graded earnings to enter the 2012 Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May.
