Take Charge Indy, under the guidance of three-time Kentucky Derby winning jockey Calvin Borel, set a moderate pace and then held off Reveron and Union Rags in deep stretch to win the Grade 1 Florida Derby. Reveron stalked the pace the entire way around the track but couldn't get by the winner in the stretch. Race favorite Union Rags, sent off at odds of 2/5, raced mid-pack early on, got caught in behind horses as he rounded the far turn, was moved to the inside by Julien Leparoux to find space, and made a good late charge to just miss finishing second. El Padrino, second choice at 5/2 on the board, did not threaten the winner and rounded out the superfecta.
Take Charge Indy is a three-year-old son of A.P. Indy out of a Dehere mare (Take Charge Lady). He is trained by Patrick Byrne.
